Match Recap: Women's Tennis |

Lazaridou takes down No. 1 in Owls team loss

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Kicking off its season with the unenviable task of battling the No. 2 ranked Maroons from the University of Chicago, the Kenyon College women's tennis team fell behind early and eventually absorbed a 7-2 loss on Saturday afternoon.

Kenyon, ranked at No. 19, was swept in doubles competition. Sophomores Eleni Lazaridou and Allaire Berl put up a fight in the No. 1 doubles match before falling 8-6, but the Owls were defeated at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles by respective scores of 8-2 and 8-0.

When competition flipped to singles play, Lazaridou came up with a big win at No. 1, holding off Sylwia Mikos by a 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 (10-7) count. Both players were All-Americans last season, but heading into this season, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association had Mikos ranked as the No. 1 singles player in NCAA Division III and had Lazaridou ranked at No. 19.

Beyond that exciting win, the Owls couldn't muster much more. The only other singles victory for Kenyon came from first-year Ana Brand, who posted a 7-5, 4-6, 10-2 win against Nicole Geller in the No. 5 match.

Things don't get a whole lot easier for Kenyon (0-1) next week. On Saturday, the Owls will head to Cleveland to tangle with No. 17-ranked Case Western Reserve University.
