Owls get hot from three but fall to Tigers

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio -- The Kenyon College men's basketball team finished up their regular season with a road matchup against Wittenberg University, with the Owls (5-20, 3-13 NCAC) falling to the Tigers (17-8, 11-5 NCAC) by a score of 75-55. The Owls shot very well from the three-point line, going 7-for-15, a 46.7 percent clip. This marked the season's second matchup between the two North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) teams, with Wittenberg taking the season series after winning the first matchup by five points.

Kenyon started strong, taking an early lead due to some sharp shooting behind the line. Anthony Testa scored the first basket for the Owls, sinking a three-pointer from the wing coming off a low post pass from Murathan Kocaman. A few possessions later, the two players connected again as Testa came off the big man's screen, took a handoff, and drilled another three. Shortly after, Kocaman tallied another assist, leading Dylan Fuerst for an easy two coming off a backdoor cut. A few minutes later, Connor Moss tied the score up at 11 by knocking down a three of his own.

However, Wittenberg proceeded to go on a 10-0 run, which was highlighted by a putback dunk from Eddie Brown, a Tigers forward. The Owls responded with a five-point run courtesy of a corner three from Justin Gagnon and a layup from Kocaman. Gagnon played a season-high 22 minutes, and the first-year tied his season high by finishing with nine points, going 3-of-5 from behind the three-point line. The first half concluded with Wittenberg on top by a score of 32-20.

Kenyon's leading scorer, Gefen Bar-Cohen emerged in the second half after being limited by foul trouble. He scored all 11 of his points in the second frame and even hit his fifth three-pointer of the season. The Owls cut the lead down to eight points on multiple occasions, but they could not get closer than that for the remainder of the game. Kenyon was unable to convert at a high percentage from the charity stripe, as they were only 8-of-16. Wittenberg expanded their lead throughout the second half, and the final buzzer sounded with the Tigers on top 75-55.

Kenyon finished their regular season with the eighth seed in the NCAC, so the Owls' campaign will continue in the postseason tournament. They will play at Wabash College, the No. 1 seed, this coming Tuesday, February 20. The Owls, who are seeking an upset, are making their first NCAC Tournament berth since the 2015-2016 season.
