Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Owls cruise to season-opening win over Pioneers

GAMBIER, Ohio -- Fueled by seven goals and one assist from sophomore David Chintala, the Kenyon College men's lacrosse team opened the 2024 campaign Saturday with a 13-4 home victory over the Transylvania University Pioneers.

Chintala, who led the team with 54 goals last season as a first-year, scored twice in both the first and second quarters. He then pumped in three more in the third to seal the deal for the Owls (1-0).

Both teams got off to a shaky start in the freezing temperatures. Dropped balls and turnovers plagued both sides. Transylvania powered through it, though, and netted the game's first goal at the 7:51 mark of the first quarter.

That tally served as a wake-up call for Kenyon, which did warm up and shook off its misuses. At the 5:17 mark, Chintala tied the game utilizing an assist from Jack McCarren. Two minutes later, Mike Kapral scored off an assist from Tanner Lewis. That score occurred about a minute before Chintala struck again, this time off the first of three assists from Rowan Goldin.

The Pioneers hung around at the start of the second quarter, scoring 20 seconds in and pulling within one of Kenyon. The Owls, however, replied with threes straight to get to halftime with a 6-2 lead. Two of those goals came from Chintala and two were in man-up situations. The other Kenyon goal in that second frame was scored by Gavin Gumucio, also a sophomore.

Transylvania (0-2) recorded the first goal of the third quarter, but Kenyon had another answer. This time it was a string of five straight scores to blow the game wide open. Three of those came from Chintala and the other two were scored by Tucker Fulton and Chris Worton.

Kapral and Lewis tacked on fourth-quarter goals to put a cap on the Kenyon scoring.

Kenyon out-shot Transylvania 41-30 and went 2-of-5 with the extra man. The Pioneers were held scoreless in three extra-man opportunities.

Thomas Nelson went 11-of-18 in face-offs for Kenyon and scooped up a game-high eight ground balls. Joe Sikora and Colin Williams each recorded a couple of caused turnovers and Adam Hall made eight saves in front of the Owls' cage.

The result was Kenyon's 11th straight season-opening win. The Owls will now turn their focus to Wednesday's road game at Baldwin Wallace University. One season ago, Kenyon started its schedule with an 11-10 win against the Yellow Jackets.
