Kenyon men open dual match play with a split

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Playing Saturday at University of Mary Washington's indoor courts, the Kenyon College men's tennis team got its spring schedule started with a split of two matches. The Owls opened the day with a 6-3 loss to host Mary Washington, but closed out the day with a 7-2 victory against Shenandoah University.

Against the Hornets from Shenandoah, Kenyon controlled the match from the start. The Owls swept the doubles matches to build a quick 3-0 advantage. At No. 3 doubles, Harshal Rukhaiyar and Alejandro Gonzalez raced out to an 8-0 win. At No. 2, Christophe Leblanc and Gianluca Bocanegra followed up with an 8-3 win. The match at No. 1 doubles was a bit tighter, but Paulo Pocasangre Kreling and Eliezer Gonzalez held on for an 8-7 victory.

Following those results, the Owls needed just two singles wins to claim the team victory. They ended up doubling that output and easily put Shenandoah away. Two of those Kenyon singles wins came from the bottom of the lineup, where Leblanc served up a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 5 and Rukhaiyar posted a 7-6, 6-1 triumph at No. 6.

Kenyon's other two singles wins were recorded by Pocasangre Kreling at No. 1 and by Eliezer Gonzalez at No. 3.

Prior to finishing off Saturday with the team victory, the day didn't quite get off to the start that the Owls envisioned. Playing against Mary Washington, Kenyon was swept in doubles play. Both the team's No. 2 and No. 3 pairings lost by identical 8-4 scores, while the No. 1 team of Eliezer Gonzalez and Pocasangre Kreling made it close before falling 8-7 to the Eagles' pairing.

In singles play, the Owls needed five out of six wins, but ended up splitting the slate with the Eagles. The trio of Kenyon winners included Pocasangre Kreling, Alejandro Gonzalez and Bocanegra. Pocasangre Kreling was victorious by a 6-4, 6-1 count at No. 2 while Alejandro Gonzalez registered a 6-3, 6-0 victory in the No. 3 match. Rounding out the group, Bocanegra claimed a 4-6, 6-1, 10-7 win in the No. 4 match.

After a busy day, Kenyon will get right back at it tomorrow, with a 9 a.m. neutral-site match against Stevens Institute of Technology.
