Improving Owls nail down first two-game sweep

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- After going through last season without winning back-to-back games, the rejuvenated Kenyon College softball program logged its first doubleheader sweep of the 2024 season. The Owls opened play Sunday morning with a six-inning, 14-6 win against Dean College. They later closed the day with a 2-1 triumph over Thiel College.

The wins evened out the Owls' season record at 4-4

Kenyon got the bats going in game one and also got the gift of eight errors from a Dean team that struggled defensively. At the top of the Kenyon batting order, sophomore Arianna Jalomo went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI. Maeve McLaughlin had a hit and three RBI, while Lindsay George and Natalya Delsante both had two RBI and a run scored. Madison Buckwalter was 2-for-2 with two runs scored and an RBI and Keala Montgomery contributed a hit, two runs and an RBI.

The Owls went to work right away, scoring four times in the first inning. The big hit in that barrage was a one-run triple off the bat of Montgomery. It wasn't, however, until the fourth inning that Kenyon scored again to move ahead 5-1.

The Owls then let things slip away in the top of the fifth. Two errors, a wild pitch, a passed ball and five Dean hits allowed the Bulldogs to score five times and take a 6-5 lead.

Not letting the win get away from them, the Owls answered with five runs in the fifth and four more in the sixth to end the game early via the eight-run rule. Key RBI singles from Jalomo and Maddie Friday kept things going in the fifth inning. In the sixth, a two-run double from McLaughlin ended the game.

In game two, first-year pitcher Kylie Hamm guided Kenyon to its second one-run win over the last three days. Hamm threw all seven innings and allowed one earned run on nine hits and a walk. She struck out four and lowered her season earned run average to 2.78.

Buckwalter gave Hamm an early lead to work with. In the bottom of the first, Jalomo singled and later advanced to second on a ground out. Two batters later, Buckwalter singled up the middle to plate Jalomo. Buckwalter ended up going 3-for-5 with two runs, two RBI and two walks over the two-game set. She currently leads the team with a .478 batting average, just ahead of Jalomo, who is hitting .407.

Thiel used two doubles in the third inning to score its lone run. Two innings, later, the Owls tallied what would be the winning run. In the bottom of the fifth, Delsante got on base and moved to second due to a Thiel error. Celia Torino pinch ran for Delsante. She moved to third on a sacrifice bunt from Allison McCutchen and then scored on a sacrifice fly from Friday.

Overall, Kenyon had just three hits in the game and two of them came from Jalomo, who went a combined 5-for-8 with three runs, two RBI and a stolen base.

Kenyon now moves on to face Brevard College in a Monday doubleheader beginning at 9 a.m.
