MALIBU, Calif. -- The Kenyon College women's tennis team closed its California campaign with a 6-3 loss to Sewanee. The No. 18-ranked Owls (2-4) picked up a doubles win and claimed a couple of singles bouts, but the No. 14-ranked Tigers (5-4) took two-thirds of the matches to come out on top.
The ranked competitors played each other close, and three matches needed a tiebreaker to crown a winner. Both No. 1 bouts needed extra play, with Sewanee winning 8-7 (7-5) in the top doubles contest and Kenyon coming out on top 6-2, 7-6 (8-6). Eleni Lazaridou was at the center of each result, pairing with Allaire Berl in doubles and taking down Katherine Petty in singles.
The Owls ousted the Tigers in another tiebreaker at No. 3 singles. Shadia Amado Aguad battled back from a 2-6 set-one loss to win 6-4 and 7-6 (8-6) over the next two sets. Kenyon's third point was added to the board back in doubles action when the No. 3 duo of Lalasa Nagireddy and Ana Brand won 8-6.
In the remaining matches, Sewanee won at No. 2 doubles against Eleni Dakos and Amado Aguad and downed Berl, Dakos, Brand, and Nagireddy in the remaining singles matchups.
Kenyon is set to tangle with two more tough teams before getting back to Gambier. The Owls are headed across the country to Fredericksburg, Virginia, to take on No. 28 University of Mary Washington on March 16 and No. 20 Tufts University on March 17.
