Kenyon scores 17 straight, splits DH with Scots

FORT PIERCE, Fla.-- The Kenyon College baseball team ran its winning streak to six with a dominant 15-0 shutout in game one of a twin bill against Monmouth College. The Owls scored the first two runs in game two to run their scoring stretch to 17 straight, but the Fighting Scots pulled away late with a 9-0 spurt that secured the doubleheader split with a 12-4 win.

The Owls (10-3) led for 12 of the day's 14 innings. Kenyon's offense took two frames to heat up, but Theo Canning gave his bats plenty of time to get going. The sophomore spun a stellar start, recording his first career complete game and shutout while improving to 2-0. Canning struck out 10 batters without issuing a walk, and he allowed just two baserunners, one via hit and one via a hit by pitch. The sole hit was a career-low, the 10 punchouts tied a career-high, and his 7.0 innings were one out short of his longest career outing.

In the third inning, Kenyon's offense started a streak of five straight frames with at least one run of support. The Owls put up a five-spot on four hits in the third, tacked on a run in the fourth and fifth frames, and added five more in the sixth. Kenyon closed the game with three more runs in the top of the seventh, and Canning rang up two batters for the final two outs of the 15-0 victory.

Luke Meister made it on base in all five of his plate appearances, going 2-for-2 while working three walks. The junior made the most of his time at the plate and on base, scoring two runs, notching two RBIs, and swiping a bag. Edwin Groff led the team with three RBIs after a 2-for-4 day at the plate, one of four Owls to have two hits. Drew Robinson and Stephen Carr also each went 2-for-4. Carr and Dustin Lee each had two RBIs, and Robinson, Nate Rosen, and Malcolm Gaynor each scored twice.

The bats kept rolling into game two as the Owls scored two first-inning runs. Rosen and Robinson led off the game with a pair of hits before coming around on back-to-back RBI groundouts by Gaynor and Groff.

Monmouth (5-4) tied the game at two with a run in the second and third innings, but the Owls took the lead right back when Robinson came home on a sacrifice fly from Groff in the bottom of the third. The back-and-forth scoring persisted into the next two innings after the Fighting Scots tied the game before Kenyon took another advantage at 4-3 when Tripper Capps came home on a wild pitch after a leadoff triple.

The Owls maintained their lead heading into the sixth, but Monmouth flipped the script and the score in the inning. The Scots scored three runs after compiling four one-out hits, taking a 6-3 lead they would not relinquish. After sitting Kenyon down 1-2-3, Monmouth kept the line moving with six seventh-inning runs. The visitors did their damage on five hits, two wild pitches, and a walk.

Monmouth's Ethan Zaayenga was dealing in game two as the first-year pitcher pitched a seven-inning complete game with five strikeouts. Robinson led Kenyon's offense with two hits, a pair of doubles, and two runs in three at-bats, capping a 4-for-7, four-run day. Groff was 0-for-2 in game two, but the junior notched a pair of RBIs to finish the day with five.

Kenyon has another twin bill on deck tomorrow as the Owls close their time in Florida with two games against Western Connecticut State. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 10 a.m. at the Lawnwood Baseball Complex.
