Owls return home to beat Bulldogs and break skid

GAMBIER, Ohio – Returning to Gambier and The Field at Benson Bowl after two tough losses in Pennsylvania to top-25 ranked teams, the Kenyon College men's lacrosse team battled the Adrian College Bulldogs on Wednesday evening.

The Owls took the lead early and never gave it up, scoring five unanswered goals in the first quarter on the way to a 15-4 win over the Bulldogs.

Kenyon (6-2) opened the scoring just over a minute into the game when Chase MacCartee found Mike Kapral for his eleventh goal of the season. Two minutes later, Hill Carter fired a powerful shot past Adrian (2-3) goalkeeper Sam Spangler to give the Owls a two-goal lead at 11:12 in the first.

Not to be outdone, midfielders Rollins Heath and Tanner Lewis each found the back of the net within a minute of each other, capitalizing on good ball movement by way of MacCartee and Rowan Goldin assists. Kapral netted his second of the game from a feed by Heath and after 15 minutes, the Owls were up 5-0.

Heath scored less than a minute into the second to expand the lead to six, and Thomas Nelson won the ensuing faceoff and took it the length of the field to bury his first goal of the season just seven seconds later to push Kenyon ahead 7-0 with 14:01 to play in the half.

Three minutes after the Owls went up a touchdown, Kapral fired his third of the day to secure the hat trick, the second of his career. Adrian scored at 8:40 in the half to break the eight-goal streak to open the game for Kenyon, but MacCartee found his first of the day to end the half up 9-1.

The Bulldogs scored two goals in 30 seconds eight minutes into the half, but from then on, the Owls defense was stout, creating the most caused turnovers of the year (12) while Adam Hall came up one save short of tying his season high (13). Kapral found his team-high fourth goal of the afternoon by way of a Colin Williams assist in transition, and the Owls went up 10-3 after three.

The offense matched its first-quarter output in the final 15 minutes, scoring five more unanswered goals to end the game. Gavin Gumucio, David Chintala, Jack Marshall, and Jack McCarren twice found the net to put the finishing touches on the Owls' sixth win.

Kenyon moves to 6-2 on the season and will look to stay undefeated at home on Saturday, March 16 when the Owls will take on Grove City College at 3:00 pm from Gambier.
