Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Fourth-quarter charge carries Owls over Colonels

GAMBIER, Ohio – The Kenyon College men's lacrosse team looked to remain undefeated for the 2024 season on Saturday afternoon at The Field at Benson Bowl against the Centre College Colonels, another team yet to record a loss going into the contest.

After the Colonels took the halftime lead and held it into the final period, the Owls rattled off eight fourth quarter goals to rally past Centre 17-12 and move to 5-0 for the season.

Centre (3-1) came out and quickly jumped to a 2-0 lead midway through the first quarter. It wasn't until 2:47 left in the opening quarter that Lucas Flynn found the back of the net off of an assist from Mike Kapral. The Colonels responded to restore the two-goal deficit, but with 37 seconds left in the first, Jack McCarren got his first goal of the day to get the Owls to 3-2 after one.

Kenyon would take the lead early in the second after McCarren and Rowan Goldin scored goals to make it 4-3 with 13:41 in the half, but Centre would fire off three straight to take the lead 6-4 near the midway point in the quarter.

Tanner Lewis scored next to bring Kenyon within one, but Centre ended the half with two straight goals and would take an 8-5 lead after 30 minutes.

Out of halftime, the Owls had a four-goal swing as McCarren, Chase MacCartee, and Chintala twice found the net to give Kenyon a 9-8 lead with 5:27 left in the third. However, the Colonels would go on another three-goal run to take an 11-9 lead going into the fourth.

As the fourth quarter began, the Owls seized every opportunity possible on the offensive end, going on a massive seven-goal run over 10 minutes to start the fourth. Flynn, Chintala, Kapral, MacCartee, McCarren, and Gavin Gumucio (twice) all got involved on the stat sheet in the run, and with five minutes left to play, Kenyon was up 16-11.

Centre scored with three minutes to play, but it was too little too late, as Chintala cashed in an empty net goal with 25 seconds remaining to put the finishing touches on an incredible fourth quarter for the Owls and the team's fifth win of the season.

As a team, Kenyon outshot Centre 52-41, won the groundball battle 30-20, and went 2-of-4 on man-up opportunities. Chintala and McCarren had four goals each to lead all scorers, while Rollins Heath had a team-high three assists.

Thomas Nelson went 21-32 (65.6 percent) for faceoffs on the day and scooped up a team-high 16 ground balls. Adam Hall added 13 saves on the defensive end.

The win keeps the Owls undefeated on the season at 5-0. Kenyon is back in action on Wednesday, March 6 to take on Dickinson College at 4:00 pm from Carlisle, Pennsylvania.
