Owls and Comets each take one in home opener

iGAMBIER, Ohio – On Wednesday afternoon, the Kenyon College softball team welcomed Capital University to Gambier for the team's 2024 home opener from the Kenyon Softball Complex. Although the Owls' offense had a slow start in a 5-1 game one loss, the team scored three unanswered runs in game two to split with the Comets 4-2.

Both teams were scoreless through the first two innings in game one, but Capital broke through in the top of the third, scoring three straight runs capped off by a steal home to gain a 3-0 lead. Brooke Avila gapped an RBI double in the bottom of the fourth to score Natalya Delsante, making it 3-1 and chipping away at the deficit.

The Comets added two more in the top of the six to pull away at 5-1, and the home team could not drum up any more offense, as Capital pitcher Krislyn Bales moved to a perfect 3-0 on the season. The Owls were held to five hits and left five on base, including trailing 3-0 in stolen bases for the game.

Kylie Hamm started for Kenyon, going the full seven innings while giving up seven hits and just two earned runs to go along with three strikeouts and a walk to move her record to 7-5 for 2024.

After slow starts in game one, the teams wasted no time scoring in game two, as each squad tallied one run apiece in the opening inning. Capital's came by way of a sacrifice bunt, while Keala Montgomery smoked a double into right-center field to score Arianna Jalomo for Kenyon.

The two teams exchanged runs again in the fourth inning, both scoring RBI singles to knot the game at 2, with Amanda Harris batting in the run for the Owls.

In the bottom of the fifth, smart baserunning saw Delsante advance to third after a wild pitch and a flyout tag, and Montgomery batted her in with another RBI double. Montgomery also advanced to third on a wild pitch in the next at-bat and Avila sent a deep sac fly which scored Montgomery to give Kenyon a 4-2 lead.

Jillian Messinger and Allison McCutchen split pitching duties in game two, going four and three innings respectively. Messinger dealt two strikeouts with four hits and two runs, while McCutchen led a shutout final three innings with one strikeout and two hits to stop the Comets and secure the 4-2 split.

Montgomery led the Owls' offense for the doubleheader, tallying four hits over the two games with three hits, two RBIs, two doubles, and one run coming in game two.

Kenyon moves to 12-8 overall with the split. The Owls will stay at home for the next six games, the first two coming on Saturday, March 30 where the team will take on the Otterbein College Cardinals for a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 pm and honor the 2024 Senior Class.
