Meister mashes three homers, Owls sweep Bishops

DELAWARE, Ohio – The Kenyon College baseball team opened up play in the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) on Friday afternoon, traveling to Delaware, Ohio for a doubleheader against Ohio Wesleyan University at Littick Field.

The Owls offense cruised to a pair of wins to start the conference slate undefeated, as Luke Meister capped off the performance with three homers in game two, setting a program record that has stood unbroken since 1970.

Meister's record-breaking performance started in the third inning of game two, when Ohio Wesleyan (10-8, 0-2 NCAC) had just scored four runs in the previous inning to tie the game at four. His two-run shot scored himself and Tripper Capps and gave Kenyon (14-4, 2-0 NCAC) the lead. The next inning, he sent another ball over the wall for two runs to put the Owls up 9-4, and ripped his third dinger of the day in the sixth inning to extend the lead to 11-5 en route to a 14-6 win in game two

He ended the game with a career-high five RBIs and set the Kenyon College program record for most home runs in a single game. Nineteen players shared the previous record at two, spanning from 1970 to most recently in 2022.

Back in game one, Kenyon got ahead and stayed ahead, firing off a five-run second inning to gain the lead as Drew Robinson got his first two RBIs of the afternoon, followed by Edwin Groff's RBI single. Robinson and Malcolm Gaynor each circled the bags on throwing errors to put the Owls up.

Although Ohio Wesleyan got one back in the following half inning, Kenyon would score 10 straight runs in the next four innings, with four runs coming in both the fourth and fifth innings. Theo Canning added a strong start on the bump, going five innings and giving up five hits with four strikeouts and a run.

For the first matchup, Robinson led the Owls with a season-high four RBIs. Nate Rosen and Capps tallied three hits each as part of a season-high 15 runs and 15 hits. Capps and Gaynor each cleared the fences for home runs as Kenyon cruised to a 15-2 win.

The wins move the Owls' record to 14-4 on the year and 2-0 in the NCAC. Kenyon is back in action on Tuesday, April 2 for another road conference doubleheader against The College of Wooster beginning at 12:00 pm.
