Owls shut out Cadets, surrender to Colonels

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- Day two of the Kenyon College softball team's spring break schedule resulted in a pair of shutouts Monday afternoon. First, the Owls rolled to a 6-0 win against the Norwich University Cadets and then they succumbed to the run-rule in an 8-0 loss to the Wilkes University Colonels.

Against Norwich (0-4), Kenyon starting pitcher Amanda Harris tossed three-and-a-third innings of no-hit softball. She struck out two and walked two. After yielding that second walk, she was replaced by Kylie Hamm, who finished off the fourth inning and the fifth and sixth, as well. Hamm walked one, struck out one and gave up two bloop singles to earn the win.

While the Kenyon arms were holding the Cadets' bats at bay, the Owls offense came alive in the third and fourth innings. In the third, Maddie Friday doubled and scored on an attempted sacrifice bunt from Sophia Lynch. A few batters later, Maeve McLaughlin doubled home Arianna Jalomo to give Kenyon a 2-0 lead.

In the fourth inning, with two outs and two on, Lynch ripped a double to left centerfield, doubling the Kenyon lead. After Lynch advanced to third on a wild pitch, Brooke Avila singled her home.

Kenyon tacked on one more run in the sixth inning. That score was created by Madison Buckwalter, who singled, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch and then scored on a sacrifice fly from Keala Montgomery.

Lynch finished the game with one hit, one run scored and two RBI. McLaughlin went 3-for-4 and improved her early-season average to .417, while five other batters contributed to the Owls' final hit count of nine.

In game two, the hits were much more difficult to come by. Although Kenyon batters hit Wilkes starting pitcher Sami Hendershott hard, the ball never seemed to find the holes in the Colonels' defense.

Even when a shot did get through, things didn't go Kenyon's way. That was never more apparent than in the top of the fourth inning. Buckwalter opened the inning by smoking a triple to right centerfield. Montgomery then laced a shot to the left side, only to have the Wilkes shortstop snag the ball and double up Buckwalter on third. Lindsay George followed with a single up the middle, but Natalya Delsante's rope to center was also snared by the Colonels' defense.

Wilkes (3-1) won the game with a four-run first inning and a four-run fifth inning. Hamm, Kenyon's starter, got roughed up in the first, allowing four hits and a walk before being replaced. In the fifth, Harris, who relieved Hamm, struggled with control and walked the bases loaded, setting the stage for the Colonels to enforce the eight-run rule.

Kenyon (1-3) takes a break Tuesday and will resume play Wednesday with games against Cairn University and Martin Luther College.
