Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

Owls shut out by No. 7 Stags

CLAREMONT, Calif. -- The Kenyon College men's tennis team's punishing spring break schedule continued Saturday with a match against No. 7-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. The Owls, facing their fourth straight ranked team, couldn't keep up with the host Stags, who ran away with a 7-0 win.

Prior to the match, the teams decided to play NCAA Division I format, which changes doubles from an eight-point set to a six-point set and allots just one team point to the winner of the most doubles matches, instead of one team point for each match.

To start things off, Kenyon's No. 1 and No. 2 doubles teams lost by 6-2 counts. The No. 3 doubles team of Alejandro Gonzalez and Gianluca Bocanegra nearly logged a win for the Owls, but wound up falling short 7-6 (7-5).

The Stags, who improved to 6-3 with the victory, dominated the singles matches, as well. They took five out of the six singles matches in straight sets. Gonzalez put up a fight at No. 3, but fell to Matthew Robinson 6-4, 7-5.

Kenyon sophomore Paulo Pocasangre Kreling got to a third set in the No. 1 match, but he, too, was defeated. His opponent, Advik Mareeduy, started strong and finished strong to pull out the 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 triumph.

The Owls (3-4) will look to regroup tomorrow, as they head to Whittier College to take on the Poets at 2 p.m. (PST).
