Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Comeback falls short as Bishops best Owls

DELAWARE, Ohio – After two straight home games to open up the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) schedule, the Kenyon College men's lacrosse team had its first road conference contest on Saturday night, as the team made the short trip to take on Ohio Wesleyan University.

Although the Owls jumped out to an early lead, the Bishops charged back to take the lead and never looked back, holding off the fourth-quarter comeback for the 14-9 win.

First-year midfielder Miles Malawer built on his recent success since he cracked the starting lineup two games ago, getting the game's first goal just 30 seconds in, his fifth of the season. Three minutes later, Mike Kapral found the back of the net to put Kenyon (8-5, 2-0 NCAC) up 2-0 at 11:49 in the first.

Ohio Wesleyan (8-3, 5-0 NCAC) responded by scoring three straight goals over the next ten minutes of play, but Chase MacCartee fired the equalizer with four seconds remaining in the first to tie the game at three.

The Bishops took the lead early in the second and never gave it up. The home team went on to score seven out of nine goals in the second and third quarters to go up 10-5 after 45 minutes. David Chintala and Rowan Goldin each scored to bring the Owls back within five with one quarter remaining.

Kenyon tried to spark a comeback, opening the fourth with two goals to cut the lead to 10-7 as MacCartee and Jack Marshall scored, but Ohio Wesleyan answered with a pair of goals. In the final minutes of the game, the Owls again found the net twice, this time Luke Riney and Colin Williams, but the Bishops added two more to end the game 14-9.

MacCartee led the Owls with two goals on a night where eight different players found the back of the net. Adam Hall made nine saves in the cage, while Thomas Nelson went 20-of-26 (76.9 percent) on faceoffs.

The loss drops Kenyon's record to 8-5 overall and 2-2 in the conference. The Owls will return to Gambier on Wednesday, April 17 for another NCAC test from The Field at Benson Bowl, taking on Wittenberg University at 4:00 pm.
