Tigers take two in Owls’ conference opener

GREENCASTLE, Ind. – The Kenyon College softball team opened its North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) schedule on Saturday afternoon, traveling to Greencastle, Indiana for a doubleheader with DePauw University.

The Owls' offense struggled in both contests, while the Tigers capitalized on their opportunities at the plate to take both games of the doubleheader in five innings, 8-0 and 9-0 respectively.

DePauw (12-11-1, 2-0 NCAC) got off to a hot start in game one, firing two runs in the bottom of the first. Keala Montgomery started the second with a base hit and advanced to second by way of a Brooke Avila bunt. After the Tigers catcher threw out Montgomery at second, Maddie Friday ripped a single to get Avila into scoring position. Sophia Lynch grounded out to move the runners and Lindsay George walked, which loaded the bases with two outs. Unfortunately, Kenyon (13-11, 0-2 NCAC) could not capitalize off that chance, which would prove to be the team's best all game.

In the next two innings, the Tigers scored six runs, while the Owls were held scoreless. Although both teams had five hits each, DePauw was able to cash in with runners in scoring position while Kenyon was not, falling 8-0 in five innings.

Kenyon's offense opened the second game with a good scoring opportunity, as Natalya Delsante was hit by a pitch, but advanced to third base on a DePauw throwing error. However, two foul outs and a strikeout on the next three at-bats left her at the corner and the Owls off the scoreboard.

The Tigers responded with a solo home run in the bottom of the first and backed it up with two more in the second to make it 3-0. Amanda Harris (2.1 innings), Allison McCutchen (1.1 innings), and Jillian Messinger (0.1 innings) split the Owls' pitching duties in game two, but could not get any momentum going, as DePauw would go on to score three runs in the third and fourth innings, setting the 9-0 final after five.

The losses drop Kenyon's record to 13-11 and 0-2 in the NCAC. The Owls will continue its conference schedule on Wednesday, April 17, where the team will travel to Wooster, Ohio for a doubleheader with The College of Wooster Fighting Scots.
