Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Owls surge late, not enough to stop Scots

WOOSTER, Ohio – The Kenyon College women's lacrosse team made the short trip to Wooster, Ohio on Tuesday night for the team's third North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) game of the season, taking on The College of Wooster.

After battling through a close first half where the Owls trailed 6-5, the Scots built a five goal lead in the third quarter and despite a hearty comeback effort to bring the deficit to one with under a minute remaining, the home team fended off the comeback and narrowly escaped with a 13-12 victory.

Kenyon opened the scoring less than a minute into the contest, as Alex Tiatia netted her tenth goal of the season to give the Owls an early road lead. However, Wooster fired back and went on a 5-1 scoring run throughout the end of the first and into the second quarter, and the score stood at 5-2 with 10 minutes to play in the half.

The Owls overcame their first big deficit of the day by way of goals from Ali Hatfield, Ashley Quinn, and Spencer Kirsch with just 10 seconds in the half to put Kenyon right back in the mix trailing 6-5 after 30 minutes.

Wooster extended its lead to two scores just over 30 seconds into the third, but Ashleigh Dixon and Ella Rigoli each found twine to tie the game at seven with a woman-up goal at 7:42 in the quarter.

First-year goaltender Audrey Richardson got her first career start in net for the Scots, and had a strong outing to keep the Owls out of the back of the net for much of the third quarter and into the fourth, registering 12 saves on the day and allowing Wooster to build a 13-8 lead with 11:14 remaining in the game.

Much like the end of the first half, Kenyon turned up the heat in the fourth quarter as Quinn, Kirsch, Rigoli, and Mallory Brophy all scored in the final four minutes of the contest, cutting the lead to 13-12 with just under a minute to play.

On the next draw control, the Scots came up with the contested ground ball and despite causing 13 turnovers on the day, the Owls couldn't get one when it counted most, allowing Wooster to wither away the clock for the win.

Nola Garand stood tall in cage for Kenyon, making 12 saves on 25 shots faced (48 percent). Quinn led the Owls offensive effort, tying her career high with three goals, while Brophy dished two assists in the loss.

Kenyon's record drops to 5-6 on the season and 1-2 in conference. The Owls will return to Gambier and face off against Denison University on Saturday, April 20 at 1:00 pm, where the team will honor its alumni.
