Owls’ win at DePauw clinches postseason position

GREENCASTLE, Ind. -- Mike Kapral rang up five goals and headlined a Kenyon College offense that recorded a 16-8 men's lacrosse triumph over the DePauw University Tigers on Saturday afternoon at Reavis Stadium.

The win secured for Kenyon a spot in the 2024 North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Tournament, a four-team event that will begin with semifinal games on Wednesday, May 1. The win also nailed down Kenyon's fourth straight season of 10 wins or more, excluding the two pandemic-shortened seasons (2020 and 2021).

Kapral got Kenyon (10-5 overall, 4-2 NCAC) on track right away. He scored an unassisted goal less than a minute into the game and then tacked on another, with the help of Josh Temple, about three minutes later.

Tanner Lewis added another Kenyon goal, as did David Chintala, who gave the visiting Owls a 4-0 lead just five minutes into the conference contest. Meanwhile, the Kenyon defense held the Tigers scoreless through the first quarter and for a little more than five minutes into the second quarter.

It wasn't until the 9:44 mark of the second quarter that DePauw was able to light up the scoreboard. That Tiger goal, however, was countered by two more from Kapral, a sophomore who ended up with a career-best, single-game goal count.

After the hot start, Kenyon cooled a little and got to intermission with a 6-2 advantage.

Thomas Nelson, who won 14-of-17 face-offs, claimed the opening face of the second half, marched it down the field and scored within seven seconds. Rollins Heath and Lewis tacked on two more Kenyon tallies and the Owls had a 9-2 lead.

The third quarter was the most prolific for both teams, each scoring five times and maintaining Kenyon's four-goal cushion headed into the final frame.

The Tigers never got closer than four the rest of the way. Kapral notched his fifth goal to move the Owls to a 13-8 lead and Chintala rattled off two straight to seal the deal.

Chintala, a sophomore, finished the game with three goals and one assist. His goal output helped him surpass a career milestone and put his two-year total at 101. With multiple games left this season, and just at the halfway mark of his collegiate career, Chintala is on pace to obliterate the Kenyon career record of 140 goals.

Kenyon's offense also got a lift from Lewis, who, like Chintala, finished with three goals and one assist. Heath wound up with two goals and an assist, while Jack McCarren recorded one goal and two assists.

In net, Adam Hall made 11 saves for the Owls, who will return to competition Tuesday with a conference game at The College of Wooster (10-5, 4-2 NCAC).

DePauw, led by two goals apiece from Gavin Berry and Jack Neff, dropped to 8-7 overall and 2-5 in NCAC play.
