Owls coast through NCAC Quarterfinal

GRANVILLE, Ohio -- The Kenyon College men's tennis team, the No. 2 seed in the eight-team North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Tournament, coasted through Friday's quarterfinal round and ousted the No. 7 seed Ohio Wesleyan University by a 5-0 final score.

The outcome puts Kenyon, the No. 24 ranked team in NCAA Division III, into Saturday's semifinal round. That match, scheduled for a noon start, will pit the Owls against the winner of Friday's quarterfinal between No. 3 seed DePauw University and No. 6 seed Oberlin College.

All matches, from the quarterfinals to Sunday's final, are being hosted by Denison University.

Kenyon got its match going against Ohio Wesleyan with a quick 8-0 win at No. 3 doubles. In that contest, the Owls pairing of Alejandro Gonzalez and Eliezer Gonzalez blanked Ohio Welsyans's pairing of Rainer Holl and Gabe Fogle, 8-0.

Not long after that, Rishil Kondapaneni and Eric Zhang combined for an 8-2 Kenyon win in the No. 2 doubles match. Paulo Pocasangre Kreling and Gianluca Bocanegra then completed the doubles sweep for the Owls with an 8-3 victory in the No. 1 match-up.

In singles play, Kenyon needed just two wins to secure the team victory and advance in tournament play. The first of those two wins came from Zhang, who defeated Fogle 6-1, 6-2 in the No. 4 slot. At No. 2 singles, Eliezer Gonzalez clinched things for the Owls as he rolled to a 6-0, 6-2 triumph over Marcelo Aguilar.

The win improved Kenyon's overall record to 13-7, while the loss ended Ohio Wesleyan's season at 7-10.
