Owls handle Hiram, honor seniors

GAMBIER, Ohio -- The Kenyon College men's lacrosse team had a couple of reasons to celebrate on Saturday. The day began with a Senior Day celebration that recognized a dozen graduating Owls, and the team continued to provide reasons to cheer while taking down the Hiram College Terriers 28-6.

Kenyon's 12-man senior class includes Nick Ciampoli, Jake Donaldson-Reid, Tucker Fulton, Rowan Goldin, Samuel Holleran, David Lifson, Chase MacCartee, Jack Marshall, Jack McClellan, Teddy Oliver, Joe Sikora, and Andrew Woollard. All 12 seniors saw the field, and the group combined for 11 of the team's 28 goals.

The victory ensures that the seniors and the rest of the Owls will have at least one more outing this season. Kenyon improved to 12-5 this season and finished their North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) slate with a 6-2 mark, clinching the third seed in the upcoming NCAC Tournament. The Owls will take on Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio, at 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 2, after the Battling Bishops earned the league's No. 2 seed after falling against top-seeded Denison University in their regular-season finale. On the other hand, Hiram finished their season with a 5-11 (0-8 NCAC) record.

The Owls came out firing against the Terriers, opening the game with 12 straight scores. Hiram got on the board twice late in the first frame, but the home team held a 13-2 edge through 15 minutes of play. Kenyon continued to get to the net, scoring 12 of the game's next 13 goals, including a stretch of nine straight in the second and third quarters. Hiram outscored Kenyon 2-1 in the final frame as the Owls coasted to victory.

Kenyon's scoring output is tied for the fourth-most goals in a game in program history, matching the 28 goals scored at Hiram last season and versus Marietta College in 2002. A whopping 15 Owls got in on the scoring, and three teammates tied for the game-high with four scores. Marshall and Oliver, a pair of seniors, matched Mike Kapral with four goals apiece, a mark also reached by Hiram's Aaron Gardner. The four goals marked a career-best output for both Marshall and Oliver, who each added an assist.

The offense ran through Gavin Gumucio early as the sophomore scored or assisted on seven of Kenyon's first 10 goals. Gumucio finished with a game-best seven points, including a career-high six dimes. Cole Able added a pair of goals and assists en route to four points. Kyle Becker, David Chintala, and Lifson chipped in two goals apiece, while Cameron Longway scored a goal while assisting on two others.

Kenyon was 31-for-38 in the face-off circle, a .816 winning percentage. Chris Worton was 14-for-20 with a game-high 10 ground balls, Will Jordan was 11-for-12, and Thomas Nelson was flawless in six tries. Adam Hall, Jack McClellan, Ryan Matarese, and Jac Dimaculangan all saw time in goal, with McClellan making a team-high three saves.
