Terriers edge Owls in conference doubleheader

HIRAM, Ohio -- A young Kenyon College softball team continues to hang with competition, but is still trying to get over the hump in close contests. Saturday was another example of that scenario, as the Owls battled the Hiram College Terriers on the road and were edged 2-1 in game one and then 4-2 in game two of a North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) doubleheader.

Kenyon is now 1-5 in its last six games. Four of those losses were by one run and the other was by two. Overall, the Owls now sit at 14-18 with a 1-9 record in NCAC play. Hiram, winners 11 times in their last 12 games, improved to 19-11 overall and 9-1 in the NCAC.

Hiram opened up the day's scoring in the bottom of the fourth inning of game one. The Terriers put together a single, a triple and another single to score twice. Kenyon came back in the top of the fifth when Brooke Avila singled and Maddie Friday brought her home with a double to left field. That would be all the scoring for game one.

Kenyon pitcher Kylie Hamm threw all six innings and gave up the two runs on seven hits and one walk. She was outdone by Hiram starter, Darian Kanno, who tossed seven innings of five-hit ball, walking just one and striking out seven.

A total of six runs were scored in game two and five of those were plated in the first inning. Kenyon got rolling in the top of the frame with a Madison Buckwalter sacrifice fly, which was followed by a run-scoring double from Maeve McLaughlin.

The Owls' 2-0 lead didn't last long, though. The Terriers got to Kenyon starter Jillian Messinger for three runs in the bottom of the first. A walk and three straight singles gave Hiram the lead and chased Messinger from the circle.

Allison McCutchen relieved Messinger. She ended up finishing off the game, allowing just one more Hiram run on four hits and three walks in a span of six innings. Meanwhile, Hiram starter Angel Santellan went the distance. Following her rocky first inning, she ended up yielding just five hits and striking out four.

At the plate, McLaughlin led the way for Kenyon. Over the course of the doubleheader, she was 3-for-6 with an RBI. Keala Montgomery was 2-for-6 with a run scored and Natalya Delsante also contributed a 2-for-6 showing.

The Owls will turn around and head south for their next scheduled games, a Sunday doubleheader at Denison University. First pitch will be thrown at 1 p.m.
