Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

Two locations yield different results for Owls

CLEVELAND and DELAWARE, Ohio -- Traversing half the state, the Kenyon College men's tennis team played Friday against two teams in two different locations. The Owls started the day with a 7-2 loss at No. 4-ranked Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) and ended the day with a 9-0 rout of the Battling Bishops at Ohio Wesleyan University.

At Case, the No. 28-ranked Owls fell behind early, dropping all three doubles to the host Spartans. In singles play, Case kept rolling and whipped up three straight wins to secure the team victory.

Down 6-0, the Owls avoided the shutout with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 singles. Rishil Kondapaneni took the No. 2 match by a 3-6, 6-3, 10-5 score over Vishwa Aduru. At No. 3, it was Alejandro Gonzalez who came up with a 6-4, 7-5 win against Michael Sutanto.

After lunch and a two-hour drive south, the change of scenery was just what the Owls needed, as they rolled through the Battling Bishops in their first conference contest of the season.

Gonzalez continued his winning ways, even after being bumped up to the No. 1 singles position. At that spot, he cruised past Mark Siriwanichkul, 6-1, 6-0. Prior to that, he paired with Eliezer Gonzalez to produce an 8-1 victory over Marcelo Aguilar and Elliot Spicer in the No. 2 doubles match.

On the day, Gonzalez went a combined 3-1 and improved his season records to 12-3 in singles play and 10-6 in doubles action.

Other Kenyon two-time winners against Ohio Wesleyan included Christophe Leblanc, Eliezer Gonzalez and Eric Zhang. Leblanc teamed up with Paulo Pocasangre Kreling for an 8-3 win at No.1 doubles and then flew solo for a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 5 singles.

After his win at No. 2 doubles, Eliezer Gonzalez went on to 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 6 singles.

Zhang joined Kondapaneni to post another 8-3 win at the No. 3 doubles spot. When play flipped to singles, Zhang rattled off a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 4.

The two-match split put the Owls' records at 6-6 overall and 1-0 in the North Coast Athletic Conference. They'll continue conference play Sunday, when they head to Wittenberg University to take on the Tigers at 1:30 p.m.
