Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Bishops battle back to beat Owls in overtime

DELAWARE, Ohio – After wrapping up its non-conference schedule last weekend, the Kenyon College women's lacrosse team opened its North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) campaign on the road Friday night, facing off against Ohio Wesleyan University.

Although the Owls were firing on all cylinders to start the game, entering the third quarter with a 10-3 lead, the Battling Bishops responded with a 12-5 goal differential in the second half to win the game in overtime 15-14.

Both teams exchanged goals in the opening quarter, but Kenyon (4-5, 0-1 NCAC) emerged with an early edge, as Kate Lengel followed Spencer Kirsch's opening goal with two straight tallies to end the first up 3-2.

After Ohio Wesleyan (9-2, 1-0 NCAC) opened up the second with a goal to tie the game at three, the Owls rattled off six-straight goals in the next 14 minutes, taking a commanding 9-3 lead into halftime. Ali Hatfield led the charge with two goals, along with Mallory Brophy, Blythe Karras, Ella Rigoli, and Lengel each finding twine. Kenyon finished the half with an advantage in ground balls (14), shots (22), and shots on goal (17) and looked in control after 30 minutes.

The Owls added to the lead less than a minute into the third, as Hatfield added her hat trick goal on a player-up opportunity, but that's where the Bishops began to find their groove.

Over the next eight minutes, Ohio Wesleyan went on an 8-1 goal run to tie the game at 11 with five minutes left in the third. Kenyon answered with three goals to end the quarter and return the lead to the Owls at 14-11 to enter the fourth.

In the final period, Kenyon was held scoreless, while Ohio Wesleyan scored three goals and tied the game at 14 with 4:52 to play, a score which would stand after the end of regulation.

The Bishops started with the ball in the first overtime period, but the Owls' defense stood tall. On the offensive end, however, the scoring drought continued, and the game advanced into the second three-minute overtime half. With 37 seconds remaining in overtime, Ohio Wesleyan found the back of the net and took the game 15-14.

Nola Garand turned in 10 saves in goal, while Lengel had a career-high seven points with five goals and two assists in the losing effort.

Kenyon's record drops to 4-5 overall and 0-1 in the NCAC. The Owls return to Gambier and continue its NCAC schedule on Wednesday, April 10 to take on the Wittenberg University Tigers at 4:00 pm from The Field at Benson Bowl.
