Comets score late to upend Owls

GAMBIER, Ohio -- In their final 2024 non-conference baseball game, a make-up from a washed out doubleheader back in March, the Kenyon College Owls allowed three runs in the eighth inning and fell, 9-7, to the visiting Capital University Comets on Wednesday at McCloskey Field.

Both teams declared bullpen games and plenty of reserves were used throughout the contest. The result was early offensive fireworks, as the teams combined for a dozen runs in the first two innings
.

Kenyon (21-13) struck first in the bottom of the first. Two of the Owls' first three batters reached base via base on balls. Tyler Nee then ripped an RBI single to left. Robbie Coates put another RBI single in play, and, two batters later, Ben Zimmerman laced a two-run double down the left field line, giving Nee and Coates plenty of time to get home safely.

The 4-0 cushion didn't last long. In the top of the second, the Comets (10-26) scored six runs on four hits, two walks, a hit-by-pitch and a Kenyon error. Cade Anderson and Robby Harrison both smacked two-run hits for Capital in the inning.

In the bottom of the second, Kenyon returned fire, tying the game at 6-6. A Parker Ellis single led things off. He later moved to third on a double-play ball and then scored on a single from Ben Gimbel. The next batter, Nee, drove a double to left center, scoring Gimbel and knotting up the score.

Things calmed down from there and pitchers took over the game. For Capital, Trevor Woodyard went two innings without allowing a run, while, for Kenyon, Andrew Catron and Liam Rosengren both tossed two-and-one-third innings of shutout ball.

In the bottom of the sixth, Kenyon tallied the go-ahead run on an Ellis' solo home run to left center. Again, though, the Owls couldn't maintain the lead. In the top of the eighth inning, Capital put together three straight hits and utilized a walk and a couple wild pitches to score three times.

Noah Bromberg, the fourth pitcher used by Capital, got the win. Colin Shue, who labored through that eighth inning, took the loss for the Owls.

At the plate, Ellis finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Nee, Zimmerman and Gimbel were also 2-for-4. Nee scored once and had two RBI. Zimmerman did not score, but also had a pair of RBI. Gimbel scored one run and plated one run. Overall, Kenyon out-hit Capital 11-9.

The Owls now turn their attention to Saturday's home doubleheader. They'll host Wittenberg University with a spot in the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Tournament on the line. If Kenyon can win at least one of the two games, it will be one of four NCAC teams to make the postseason.
