OWU takes two from Kenyon in season finale

GAMBIER, Ohio -- The Ohio Wesleyan University (OWU) Battling Bishops put together two big innings Saturday and put away the host Kenyon College softball team in a season-ending softball doubleheader. A five-run sixth inning led to a 10-1 game-one win for the visiting team and a four-run seventh led to an 8-2 win in the nightcap.

The losses finalized Kenyon's records at 15-23 overall and 1-13 in North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) competition. The team's overall mark was a dramatic improvement over the previous season's record of 1-31.

In the other dugout, Ohio Wesleyan used the sweep to conclude its records at 18-15-1 overall and 6-8 in the NCAC.

Kenyon scored first in game one after Keala Montgomery and Brooke Avila smacked back-to-back doubles in the bottom of the first inning. That, however, would be all the Owls would get off OWU starting pitcher Makenna Knisley, who threw six innings of five-hit ball.

Arianna Jalomo had a two-out double in the fifth inning and the only other hits for Kenyon were singles from Natalya Delsante and Madison Buckwalter.

The Battling Bishops got to Kenyon starting pitcher Kylie Hamm for three runs in the second inning and two in the fifth, although only two of those five runs were earned. Allison McCutchen relieved Hamm, but OWU rang up five runs on five hits and three walks in the sixth inning to put the game away.

Game two was similar, as Kenyon got on the board first, tallying a run in the bottom of the first frame. Delsante got things started with a single through the left side. Two batters later, Avila singled and Delsante moved to third. When OWU tried to gun her down at the hot corner, the throw got past the third baseman, allowing Delsante to get home
.

That one-run lead held up until the third inning. At that point, the Battling Bishops scored twice off Kenyon starter Amanda Harris. They were able to put a two-spot on the board using two hits, two walks and an Owls error.

In the fifth, OWU recorded two more runs, one off Harris and the other off reliever Jillian Messinger.

Things fell apart for Kenyon in the seventh inning, when Ohio Wesleyan scored four more times with the aid of three Kenyon errors.

Kenyon got one of those runs back in the bottom of the seventh, but it was too little, too late. That final run was generated when Maeve McLaughlin singled, moved to second on a Buckwalter single, moved to third on a fielder's choice and then came home on an RBI single from Lindsay George.

The Owls had six hits in game two and two of them came from Buckwalter, who finished the day a combined 3-for-5.
