Owls taken down by Tigers in postseason opener

CHILLICOTHE, Ohio – The Kenyon College baseball team opened up North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) postseason play on Thursday afternoon, taking on top-seeded Wittenberg University from V.A. Memorial Stadium in the conference's double-elimination qualifier to see who will represent the NCAC in the NCAA Division III Tournament.

Although the Tigers jumped out to a 4-0 lead through four innings, the Owls started to battle back by scoring two of their own with the bases loaded in the top of the sixth. However, two Tiger runs in the bottom of the eighth cemented the 6-2 victory.

Christian Harris started on the mound for Kenyon and allowed one run in the bottom of the first on two hits and a walk. He was pulled for Edwin Groff in the second, who coming into the contest had only pitched three innings in the 2024 campaign. The junior kept Wittenberg off the board for two innings with two hits and one strikeout, but a three-run home run in the bottom of the fourth ended his day and left the Owls in a 4-0 hole.

Kenyon's best scoring chance of the day came in the top of the sixth inning, which started with a Ben Nash walk. Dustin Lee ripped a one-out single to left field, advancing Nash to second. After facing four pitches and two strikes, Gio Giuliani was hit by Joe Horoszko, ending the Wittenberg pitcher's day with the bases juiced.

A strikeout on the next batter brought Tripper Capps up to the plate with two outs and a chance to put runs on the board for the Owls. The senior worked a full count and tapped the payoff pitch down the third baseline. The Tiger reliever's throw bounced off the rubber at first, sending the ball out of reach, and allowing Kenyon to score two runs and cut the lead to 4-2.

The Owls could not add any more runs to the two-out rally, or any more for the game. The team went one, two, three in the seventh, eighth, and ninth innings while the Tigers added two more by way of a sacrifice fly and a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth to set the 6-2 final.

On the day, Lee had both of Kenyon's hits and one of the team's runs. Horoszko picked up the win with 5.1 innings pitched and four strikeouts, while Harris claimed the loss.

The defeat drops Kenyon's overall record to 21-16 on the season. The Owls are now faced with a must-win contest tomorrow, and will face the loser of today's DePauw and Denison matchup on Saturday May 10 at 1:30 p.m. from V.A. Memorial Stadium.
