Owls vex Vixens in season opener

GAMBIER, Ohio -- Although the final score separated the two teams by just one goal, the Kenyon College Owls maintained control for the majority of their 4-3 season-opening field hockey win over the visiting Vixens from Sweet Briar College.

Kenyon out-shot Sweet Briar 31-8, including a 16-0 difference in the first quarter alone.

The Owls peppered the Vixens cage throughout those first 15 minutes of play, but Sweet Briar goalkeeper Ashley Maggiora saved the nine shots that were on goal and kept the game scoreless for nearly 25 minutes.

After all those knocks on the door, Kenyon finally crossed the threshold with 5:20 showing on the second-half clock. Casey Master gained control of a loose ball on the right wing and sent a bouncing pass to the far post, where Grace Lane was waiting. Lane then deflected the pass, out of mid-air, into the Sweet Briar cage, giving the Owls a 1-0 edge.

In the third quarter, the Owls doubled their lead. A play developing off a penalty corner saw Master make an attempt right through the middle of the Vixens defense. Ella Haskins, deflected Master's attempted shot over to Raigan Hutter, who then scored from the left side.

About two minutes later, the Owls padded their lead even more. Again, following a corner, Hutter fired a shot that was saved, but ended up bouncing around in front of the goal. After a brief skirmish, Kiersten Hoffmann gained control and slapped the ball over the line.

Before the third quarter could come to a close, Sweet Briar scored its lone goal against Kenyon starting goalkeeper Megan Lydon, who played 56 minutes and made two saves. Credit went to Gigi Hutman, who beat Lydon from close range.

With less than 10 minutes left in the game, Kenyon seemingly put things away. A shot from Master at the top of the circle was accidentally deflected into the Vixens' cage by a Sweet Briar defender, moving the Owls' advantage to 4-1.

Kenyon put some reserves in to finish off the game and the Vixens took advantage, first with a goal from Kailey McCarthy, with less than three minutes to play, and then a goal off a corner as time expired, making the final score look a little closer than the game actually was.

The Owls will remain at home for their next game, which will be against Concordia University on Saturday with a noon start.
