Lane’s overtime goal caps Senior Day celebration

GAMBIER, Ohio – Holding Senior Day early in the season proved profitable as the Kenyon College field hockey team cashed out of Saturday's home game with a 2-1 overtime win against the visiting Falcons from Concordia (WI) University.

Grace Lane, one of the ten seniors honored in a pregame presentation, lifted the Owls to the win with a back-handed strike six minutes and six seconds into overtime. Working with her back to the goal, near the top of the circle, Lane moved a few steps to her right and then fired. Her back-handed swing put plenty of speed on the ball as it zipped past one defender and into the far right side of the Concordia cage.

The goal was Lane's second in as many games and the 24th of her career. It also moved Kenyon's record to 2-0 and dropped Concordia's record to 1-2.

The two teams battled through a stalemate in the first half, even though Kenyon out-shot the Falcons 13-0 over those first 30 minutes. Concordia goalkeeper Parks Cawthray made six saves in the half and was the main reason the game was scoreless at the half..

The Falcons then caught a break in the third quarter, scoring the game's first goal when Katie Quirke's shot was saved by Kenyon senior goalkeeper Megan Lydon. The ball, however, bounced off Lydon's pads and right to Naomi Little who tapped it over the line.

Kenyon didn't score its first goal until the fourth quarter. Having come up empty on their previous 18 shots, the Owls got their 19th shot to count. The shot came off the stick of Justine Cole and the play developed off a penalty corner. Casey Master was credited with the assist. The goal for Cole, a senior, was the first of her collegiate career. The assist was the second of the season for Master, a sophomore.

Through regulation, and overtime, Kenyon out-shot Concordia 23-7. The Owls also built a huge 16-6 advantage in penalty corners.

In addition to Lane, Cole and Lydon, Kenyon acknowledged the rest of its senior class, which included: Ella Haskins, Raigan Hutter, Darcy Miller, Kiersten Hoffmann, Sarah Molloy, Liz Cramer and Jolien Kusi.
