Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Owls shut out Scots to open conference slate

WOOSTER, Ohio – After three home games to start the season at 2-1, the Kenyon College field hockey team opened up its North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) schedule on the road Tuesday night against The College of Wooster Fighting Scots.

The Owls took the lead early and never gave it back, as goals from Kiersten Hoffmann and Maren Lawrence along with solid defensive play lifted the visitors to a 2-0 victory.

Kenyon (3-1, 1-0 NCAC)  began the game with good offensive chances, registering the game's first shots and corner opportunities less than two minutes into the game.

With 12 minutes to play in the opening quarter, great passing gave the Owls possession in the offensive end. Ella Haskins drove the net and drew the defender, leaving Hoffmann wide open on the back door for an easy one-timer to take the lead 1-0. The tally marks Hoffman's second goal of the young season, putting her second on the team, while Haskins' assist ties her for first on the squad.

In the second, Kenyon outshot Wooster (0-3, 0-1 NCAC) 4-1 led by two shots from Lawrence, but the Scots defense held up to maintain the 1-0 score through halftime.

Owls attackers had several chances coming out of the break, as Hoffman, Lawrence, Raigan Hutter, Grace Lane, and Casey Master all fired shots but failed to find the back of the net.

With just under seven minutes to play in the third, Kenyon finally broke through. Lawrence drove down the right side of the circle, cut back to evade a defender, and ripped a low reverse shot that bounced through the Wooster defense and into the back of the net to give the Owls a 2-0 lead. It's Lawrence's first goal of her sophomore campaign after ranking second on the team a year ago.

Both defenses tightened in the fourth, as each team registered one shot, but the Kenyon defense stood tall and kept the home team out of the net for the shutout victory 2-0.

Offensively, the Owls put up 23 shots and 13 on goal, compared to eight shots and three on goal for the Scots. The visitors also held an 8-6 advantage in corners.

Senior goalkeeper Megan Lydon stopped all the shots she faced in the win, registering the fourth solo shutout of her career.

Kenyon's record improves to 3-1 with the win and 1-0 in the NCAC. The Owls will return to action on Saturday, September 14 to take on the Meredith College Avenging Angels at 4:00 pm for a neutral site game from Harrisonburg, Virginia.
