Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Lawrence’s two goals lift Kenyon over Oberlin

GAMBIER, Ohio – After two road contests leading to two wins, the Kenyon College field hockey team returned to Gambier and the Field at Benson Bowl for a North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) tilt against the Oberlin College Yeowomen.

The Owls' offense was overpowering tonight, spending most of the game in the attacking end. Maren Lawrence scored two goals within about a minute of each other in the second quarter to give the home team a 2-0 lead, which they never surrendered en route to a 3-0 win.

Kenyon's (5-1, 2-0 NCAC) first goal came with 7:55 left to play in the second quarter after a lopsided first frame saw the Owls outshoot the visitors 8-0. Lawrence got the ball in front after a corner, and ripped a shot which was stopped by the Oberlin keeper but came right back to her, and she tapped it home for her third goal of the season.

Just over a minute later, the sophomore again got the ball after a corner, this time maneuvering past the charging goalie and casually backhanding it into the net to give the Owls a 2-0 lead which would stand through halftime.

Defensively, Oberlin (0-4, 0-1 NCAC) was held to just one shot and no corners on the day, as defenders Justine Cole and Liz Cramer were tough on the ball and didn't let many passes get near the circle, and Megan Lydon made the lone save she had to.

Late in the fourth, the Owls expanded their lead to three, as the Yeowomen committed a costly foul in the circle, sending Casey Master to the line to take a penalty stroke. Master lifted a low ball to the bottom left corner with just under three minutes to play to secure the 3-0 winner.

Kenyon fired 29 shots on the day with 13 of them finding the net. Grace Lane led the team in shots (6), while Master led the Owls in shots on goal (3). Each finding the net today, Lawrence and Master moved to a tie for second on the team in points (8).

The Owls' record improves to 5-1 and 2-0 in the NCAC with the win. Kenyon will remain at home and look to build its win streak on Sunday, September 22 for another conference matchup against Transylvania University at noon.
