WESTERVILLE, Ohio – The men's soccer match between Kenyon College and Otterbein University was a closely-contested affair that ended in a scoreless draw Friday night at Memorial Stadium.
It was the third tie of the year for the Owls (5-0-3), who entered the match ranked No. 3 in the country. On the other side of the field, it was the first draw of the season for the Cardinals (4-3-1), who extended their unbeaten streak to three games.
In the first period, Otterbein showed a slight edge in offensive pressure, out-shooting Kenyon, 4-3. However, Kenyon's senior goalkeeper,
Jack Pedreschi, proved to be a formidable last line of defense, making two crucial saves to keep the score level. Otterbein also had two other shots, but Kenyon's defense managed to prevent any clear scoring opportunities.
The match saw its fair share of physical play, with Otterbein drawing 10 first-half fouls, but using its aggressive approach to disrupt the Owls' offensive rhythm.
As the game progressed into the second period, the Owls seemed to find their footing, but shots were still hard to come by. Kenyon, which had just three shots in the first half, finished the game with five, while Otterbein more than doubled that count, finishing with 12.
Pedreschi continued his stellar performance in goal, making two more saves in the second period for a total of four in the match. The shutout was Pedreschi's second of the season and the 26th of his Kenyon career.
Offensively, Kenyon had just one shot on goal and that came from
Isaac Cortez, who was stopped by Jason Villalobos, Otterbein's goalkeeper who recorded his fifth shutout of the season.
Kenyon will look to get the offense going in its next match, which will be a big one as the Owls face off against No. 8-ranked Christopher Newport University. That match is set for an 11 a.m. start on Sunday at Mavec Field.
