GAMBIER, Ohio -- After building an 18-0 halftime lead during its Homecoming contest on Saturday, the Kenyon College football team survived a wild fourth quarter in which it scored a last-second touchdown to register a 32-26 win over The College of Wooster.
The win halted at 10 the Owls' losing streak to Wooster, dating back to the 2013 season. It also evened out Kenyon's overall record at 2-2 and its North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) mark at 1-1. The loss dropped Wooster to 1-3 overall and 0-2 in NCAC play.
The Owls built that first-half 18-0 lead on a pair of touchdowns and two Tyler Bell field goals. The first of those four scores occurred on Kenyon's first possession of the game, as the Owls marched 74 yards on 11 plays. The last of those plays was a 16-yard scoring scamper from quarterback Park Penrod.
The Owls scored on their next two drives, as well. Kenyon's second offensive possession spanned 82 yards and ended with a 25-yard Bell field goal. The team's next drive, sparked by a fourth-down hold from the defense, resulted in a 35-yard field goal from Bell.
Before the half ended, Penrod found David Livingston on a short touchdown pass with just 14 seconds left on the clock, giving Kenyon an 18-0 lead at the break.
Wooster put up the third quarter's only score, a two-yard touchdown run for Shakir Perkins, who set the stage for a thrilling final 15 minutes that saw the teams combine for 33 points.
The final quarter started with the conference foes trading touchdown tosses. Wooster went with a three-yard strike from Chanden Lee to Jordan Lewis. Kenyon countered with a 20-yard strike from Penrod to Dylan Carlquist. That flurry kept the Owls ahead, 24-13 with 10 minutes to play.
Wooster then used a 60-yard kickoff return, combined with a Kenyon penalty to score again. The Fighting Scots needed just one play to complete a 19-yard touchdown pass from Lee to Sebestyen Balassy, putting the score at 25-20.
From there, things started going south for the Kenyon offense, as its next two possessions ended in interceptions. The first of those two picks was in Kenyon territory and set up another Wooster score. The Fighting Scots moved the ball 35 yards over 11 plays and got a one-yard touchdown run for Jarvis Mims Jr. That run gave Wooster its first lead at 26-25 with 5:32 left on the clock.
After the second of the two Kenyon interceptions, the Owls defense held Wooster to a three-and-out. The ensuing punt set up Kenyon for a final drive on its 20-yard line with 1:36 left.Â
In that final drive, Penrod went 4-of-6 for 56 yards, hitting key passes to Carlquist, Livingston, and Brendan Comerford. His last pass of the drive drew a pass interference call on Wooster, setting the ball on the four-yard line. With just six seconds left in the game, Drake Lewis took the handoff from Penrod and plowed into the endzone for the Kenyon win.
Penrod had his best game of the season, going 29-of-52 for 370 yards and two touchdowns. The senior captain started the game by completing 10 of his first 11 passes, and his 370 passing yards were by far a career-high. He also had 14 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Topping the receiving chart were Carlquist, who caught seven balls for 103 yards and a touchdown, and Livingston, who had eight catches for 96 yards and another Kenyon touchdown. Carlquist set career-highs for both receptions and receiving yards, while Livingston hauled in his second-most catches and tallied a career-best in receiving yards.
Lewis also had a huge game for the Owls, chalking up 78 receiving yards and 82 rushing yards, including the four-yard game-winning run. The senior set season-highs for both rushing and receiving yards. When it comes to career highs, he set personal high-water marks in carries (26), receptions (4), and receiving yards (78) while landing a new career-long reception with a 51-yard catch.
Defensively, Andy Canonico compiled a game-high 1.5 tackles for loss. The senior captain tied for second on the team with five tackles and notched two quarterback hurries. Jackson Belyn led the Owls with six tackles, while fellow sophomore defensive backs Dominic Simpson and Jackson McCullough each had five. Simpson also added a team-best two pass breakups.
Up next, Kenyon will look to keep its momentum going in a pair of NCAC matchups on the road. The Owls head to Oberlin, Ohio on Saturday, October 5, to take on the Oberlin College Yeomen (0-4) at noon before heading to Hiram, Ohio to line up against the Hiram College Terriers (0-3) at 1 p.m. on Saturday, October 12.
