Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Owls best Blue Jays in last-second winner

BALTIMORE, Md. – The Kenyon College men's soccer team traveled to Baltimore, Maryland on Friday night for a showdown against its second ranked opponent in three games to open the 2024 season, taking on the No. 24-ranked Johns Hopkins University Blue Jays from historic Homewood Field.

After an eventful first half in which both teams found the net gave way to a tightly contested second, first-year midfielder Justin Buchwalter broke the tie with eight seconds left to play, burying a right-footed rocket in the low left corner to give Kenyon the win 2-1.

With about a minute left to play in the second after a back-and-forth 45 minutes, the Owls got the ball in the offensive end. Previously in the half, most of Kenyon's attacks came up empty, registering only two shots and none on goal in the second.

After a throw-in from the far sideline found Eamon Dujakovich just above the middle of the box with under 15 seconds left to play, he tapped a pass that bounced through two Blue Jays defenders, finding Buchwalter for the first goal of his collegiate career.

Buchwalter was not the only Kenyon first-year to make an impact in this battle of the birds, as just six minutes into the game, Andrew Adams capitalized on a turnover in the Johns Hopkins defensive end and beat the keeper to give the Owls an early lead. The goal also marked Adams' first career tally.

The Blue Jays were able to respond quickly to the opening strike, however, as a well-placed cross and tap-in evened the score at one in the 18th minute. This strike would be the only scoring until the game-winner nearly 72 minutes later.

Although the home team outshot Kenyon 13-7 for the game and 5-2 on goal, stout defense from the Owls' back line and four huge saves from Jack Pedreschi propelled the team to a late victory.

The win keeps Kenyon perfect on the season at 3-0. The Owls will face another ranked test on Sunday, heading back west to take on No. 17 Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, Pennsylvania at noon.
