GAMBIER, Ohio -- Both the Kenyon College and University of Rochester field hockey teams entered their early-season matchup with unblemished records, but the Owls were unable to come out of the game unscathed as the Yellow Jackets whipped up a 5-1 win.
Playing again less than a day after earning an overtime victory on The Field at Benson Bowl, Kenyon fell to 2-1 this season. Lining up against Kenyon for the first time since 2013, Rochester recorded their fourth win in as many tries this season, maintaining their undefeated, 4-0 start.Â
Despite the unsavory 5-1 final, the score does not tell the whole story as Kenyon's Megan Lydon was a stalwart in goal. The senior secured a whopping 29 saves, shattering her previous career-high of 17 set last season. Although the Yellow Jackets stung Lydon and the Owls for five goals, she posted a .853 save percentage after having to withstand 34 shots on goal and 46 total Rochester attempts. Lydon's 29 saves secured a spot in the Kenyon single-game record book, ranking as the sixth-most saves in program history, just five short of the high-water mark.
Rochester controlled the ball for the majority of the game, and the visiting offense set the tone early with a goal in the fifth minute. The Yellow Jackets added a second goal before the end of the first period, and they held a 3-0 halftime lead. Rochester outshot Kenyon 25-0 over the first half, and the visitors increased their lead to four in the third frame.
Although Kenyon's offense was unable to get going, the Owls had immediate success when a chance came their way. In the third quarter, Kenyon earned its first penalty corner to set up an offensive opportunity that led to the team's first shot of the game. Raigan Hutter played the ball in from the corner, finding Grace Lane, who turned the pass into an assist by firing a shot into the goal. Lane's third goal in as many games put the Owls on the board, but Rochester kept the home team from mounting a comeback as the visitors held on for the victory.
Kenyon will continue its busy stretch with a third game over a four-day span when the Owls head to Wooster, Ohio, to open North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) play. After the teams were supposed to open the season with a non-conference clash on August 30 before a cancellation, the Owls will line up against The College of Wooster at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, September 10.
