Game Recap: Volleyball |

Two more five-setters, two more wins for Owls

ERIE, Pa. -- The Kenyon College volleyball team is making a habit of playing five-set matches and it's also starting to make a habit of winning. The Owls, playing though their fifth straight five-set match, notched two more wins Saturday and ran their win streak to three.

The three wins over the last two days were the first for new head coach Madison Schweitzer and the three-game streak is the program's first since the end of the 2019 season.

Playing on the second and final day of the Penn State Behrend Invitational, the Owls, now with a 3-5 record, started the day by defeating the host Lions 25-9, 21-25, 30-32, 25-23, 15-10. They ended the day by chalking up a 25-21, 21-25, 20-25, 25-14, 18-16 win over Houghton University.

Against Behrend, Kenyon was paced by Aura Barinas, who cranked out team-highs of 15 kills and 17 digs. Arianna Flota served up six service aces and Hannah Schwemm dished out 39 assists. As a team, the Owls swung at a season-high .255 attack percentage, only to top that with a .284 against Houghton.

Trailing 2-1 against Behrend, Kenyon got four kills from Barinas and three from Mariyah Rumpca-Veronese to escape with a two-point win in set four. Then, in the deciding set, Kenyon benefitted from five Behrend attack errors and countered with a pair of kills from Gumz, Barinas and Rumpca-Veronese to seal the deal.

Against Houghton, Kenyon found itself in the same position, trailing two sets to one. In the fourth set, Rumpca-Veronese ignited a 6-0 Kenyon run with a couple of kills. Barinas later added three straight kills and Juliette Tomamichel tacked on two aces as the Owls forced another fifth set.

Kenyon moved ahead 6-3 in that fifth set, utilizing two more kills from Rumpca-Veronese. Houghton tied things up at 8, 9 and 10, but throw-downs from Barinas and Tomamichel put the Owls on the verge of the win at 14-12.

Houghton had other ideas, tied the set at 14 and then moved ahead 15-14. Houghton then followed with a couple of attack errors and kills from Rumpca-Veronese and Gumz lifted Kenyon to victory.

Against Houghton, Gumz had 16 kills, while Barinas and Rumpca-Veronese each had 14. Schwemm piled up 44 assists, giving her 83 on the day. Schwemm also had 17 digs and six kills throughout the two matches.

The Owls certainly deserve a rest, but they'll be back at it Tuesday, traveling to Wilmington College for a 7 p.m. game with the Quakers.
