Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Owls stop Scots for first win of the season

GAMBIER, Ohio – The Kenyon College women's soccer team's offense was firing on all cylinders Saturday afternoon, taking on the Alma College Scots from Mavec Field for the team's second home game of the young 2024 season.

Fueled by two goals from first-year Emily Copeland, the Owls captured their first win of the season, topping the Scots 3-1 and marking new head coach Sarah McClellan's first career win with Kenyon.

After being held scoreless in the first two games of the season, the Owls offense flew around the field to start the game, jumping out to a 6-0 shot advantage in the first fifteen minutes of play.

In the 18th minute, Sadie Kruger found the ball in the Alma box, firing a shot that was saved by keeper Mya Pofahl, but redirected right to Copeland who put Kenyon ahead 1-0, a mark which would stand through halftime, but not for long.

Just 17 seconds into the second half, Copeland was fouled hard in front of the net resulting in a penalty kick. She calmly ripped a shot into the low left corner to extend the home team's lead to 2-0.

The Scots responded 12 minutes later, as an Owls foul resulted in a penalty kick that found the net to set the score 2-1.

Kenyon would quiet any comeback talk and ice the game in the 66th minute, after a throw-in and some quick passing found first-year Zoe Lipp, who zipped a cross to her classmate Margot Kuller. Kuller's shot bent around a group of Alma defenders and found the top left corner to nail the 3-1 final.

Copeland paced the Owls attack in the win, registering five shots on goal along with the two tallies on the scoreboard, the first of her career. Fellow first-years Kuller and Lipp also added their first career points with a goal and an assist, respectively.

Defensively, Kenyon's back line of Juliana Grantezke, Skylar Helms, and Brooke Heis played all 90 minutes in the one-goal effort, while Ariel Kite made one save in net.

The win improves Kenyon's record to 1-2 on the season. The Owls will hit the road next weekend and travel to Hanover, Indiana to take on the Hanover College Panthers at 2:00 pm on Saturday, September 14.
