Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Owls slow down in the second, can’t stop Scots

GAMBIER, OHIO – The Kenyon College men's basketball team continued its North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) homestand to start 2025, squaring off against The College of Wooster Fighting Scots on Wednesday night from Tomsich Arena.

Similar to their last contest, the Owls kept it close in the first half fueled by nice runs from Marius Mazeika and Gefen Bar-Cohen, but the Scots proved to be too much in the second half, eventually taking the game 84-71.

Kenyon (2-11, 0-4 NCAC)  hit two nice three-pointers to take an early lead against the No.10-ranked team in Division III, as Mazeika and Jackson Maloney each connected from deep to give the Owls a 6-2 advantage four minutes into the contest.

Mazeika added a 6-0 solo run with two free-throws and two layups to give the home team a 20-15 lead with 9:17 to play in the half, capping a nine-point first frame from the underclassman.

Wooster (13-1, 5-0 NCAC) charged back with a 24-11 run to erase the Kenyon lead and build an advantage of their own, as the Scots hit 7-of-9 (77.8 percent) from the field and 3-of-5 (60 percent) from three to go ahead by double-digits

In the final four minutes of the first, Bar-Cohen scored all seven points for the Owls to keep the score close, connecting on both of his shots from the floor and going 4-of-6 (66.7 percent) from the charity stripe to set the halftime score at 39-31 Wooster.

The Scots came out of the break on fire, jumping out to a 10-0 run in the first three minutes of the second, quickly turning an eight point lead into an 18-point advantage, a deficit which the home team could never truly overcome.

Miles Versa broke the drought with a three-pointer at 16:34, and led the Kenyon offense with 14 points in the half, a new season-high from the senior. He shot 4-of-6 (66.7 percent) from the field in the second to go along with two triples and five assists, both season-high marks.

Kenyon attempted to cut into the Wooster lead several times throughout the half, but to no avail. The Scots controlled the rebound battle 23-to-9 in the half and shot 61.5 percent from the field, never allowing the Owls to get within single-digits and locking up the 84-71 victory to remain unbeaten in conference play.

Bar-Cohen led the Owls with 17 points and six rebounds, while Versa's season-high effort landed him second on the stat sheet. Maloney followed with 13 points and team highs in steals (4) and threes (3).

Kenyon's record drops to 2-11 on the season and 0-4 in the conference. The Owls will hit the road for a weekend matchup against Hiram College (5-9, 0-5 NCAC) on Saturday, January 11 at 3:00 pm.
