Owls toast seniors with wild win over Comets

GAMBIER, Ohio -- In a match that produced an overload of memorable moments, the Kenyon College volleyball team celebrated Senior Day, and then a milestone, and then a thrilling five-set thrilling win over the Capital University Comets on Friday night in Tomsich Arena.

The host Owls improved their season record to 5-15 with the non-conference triumph that went in the books with set scores of 25-14, 24-26, 25-23, 15-25, 15-11. The five sets featured 33 tied scores and 12 lead changes.

Kenyon, pumped up from the pregame Senior Day celebration, traded first-set blows with Capital for a short time and then went on a 9-2 tear that turned a 6-5 lead into a 15-7 cushion. The Comets shot themselves in the foot, marking up six errors during that Kenyon run.

After that, the Owls never let the Comets get closer than six points the rest of the way, as senior Becca Gwynne notched three kills and classmate Maggie Wolf served up five assists.

Capital owned the second set, but it wasn't easy. The Comets, ahead by six points at 19-13, had to hold off a hard-charging Kenyon team that ended up tying the score at 22, 23, and then 24, before Capital benefited from two Kenyon errors that concluded the set.

Set three was even closer, with 13 tied scores and five lead changes, neither team built a lead of more than three points. Wolf, who had three more assists in that second set, piled up seven in the third. She entered the game with 988 career assists and she hit the 1,000-assist milestone midway through the third set. She is now the 12th player in the history of the program to reach the milestone.

Capital quickly turned things around in the fourth set and, again, built a 19-13 lead. This time, however, there was no Kenyon comeback. The Comets finished off the set on a 6-2 run to force a fifth frame.

In that deciding set, the teams tied up the score at 5-5 and then 7-7. From there, Kenyon got a kill from Hannah Schwemm and an attack error from Capital. The teams traded points until a Mariyah Rumpca-Veronese kill gave the Owls a 13-10 advantage.

Capital pulled one point closer, but senior Aura Barinas blistered two kills to make the match a final. Barinas finished with three kills in the set and nine in the match. Olivia Gumz had 10 kills on the night and Rumpca-Veronese led Kenyon with both a dozen kills and 18 digs.

Wolf's final tally of 19 assists were edged by a team-best 21 from Schwemm.

Prior to the game, Wolf, Barinas, and Gwynne joined Joy Carstanjen, Lauren Blakemore, and Juliette Tomamichel as the Kenyon seniors honored for their accomplishments over the last four seasons.
