Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Owls knock off first place Blue Streaks

GAMBIER, Ohio -- In the first-ever North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) competition between the Kenyon College and John Carroll University women's soccer teams, the host Owls pulled off a mild upset, posting a 1-0 victory over the visiting Blue Streaks, who own first place in the NCAC standings.

The win, powered by a dominant Kenyon defense, pushed the Owls from fifth place in the standings to third place. The Kenyon team is now 8-2-4 overall and has seven points with a 2-1-1 conference mark.

John Carroll, previously undefeated in the conference, is now 9-4-1 overall and still owns first place with nine points and a 3-1-0 NCAC mark.

Wednesday's lone goal occurred with about 17 minutes left in the first half. Following a throw-in, Kenyon maintained control of the ball within the right side of the John Carroll zone. After a few short passes, the ball made its way to senior Margot Kuller. She then lofted a left-footed pass into the left side of the box, where sophomore Claire Pruner was charging. Pruner got to the ball in stride and punted it into the top right corner of the net for her third score of the season. The assist was Kuller's first of the season.

After that, the Kenyon defense, which ranks as the NCAC's best, held to form the rest of the way. The Owls allowed five shots in the first half, but none were on goal. In the second half, the Blue Streaks, sensing urgency, mustered five more shots, with one goal. Kenyon junior goalkeeper Ariel Kite made the save on that one shot on goal to record her seventh shutout and lower her personal goals against average to 0.31.

The Kenyon defense has yielded just four goals in 14 games played. The Owls' team goals against average of 0.29 not only ranks first in the conference, but now ranks sixth best among all teams in NCAA Division III.

Wednesday's result also upped the Owls' shutout count to 10, tying the single-season program record, which is still held by the 2006, 2015, and 2017 teams.

With at least three more games left on their schedule, the Owls will look to keep things rolling at home on Saturday against Oberlin College.
