Blue Streaks deal Owls a 3-1 defeat

GAMBIER, Ohio -- Mariyah Rumpca-Veronese had 13 kills, Lauren Blakemore and Arianna Flota both chalked up a dozen digs, and Hannah Schwemm tacked on 12 assists, but those numbers did not add up to a Kenyon College win on Wednesday night, as the host Owls dropped a conference volleyball match to the John Carroll University Blue Streaks.

The Blue Streaks jumped out a 2-0 lead with set wins of 25-20 and 20-15. The Owls answered with a 25-19 tally in set three, but the Blue Streaks came right back in the fourth to close things out with a 25-10 victory.

The loss dropped Kenyon to 5-17 overall and 1-4 in North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) play. It did not hurt the Owls' position in the conference standings, though, as they remained in sixth place, still vying for a postseason tournament spot with two NCAC games left to play.

On the other side of the net, John Carroll remained in second place in the NCAC standings. Wednesday's result brought the Blue Streaks' records to 5-1 in conference competition and 16-8 overall.

In the first set of play, the Blue Streaks jumped ahead by eight points on two separate occasions. Kenyon, using a pair of Flota service aces and a Becca Gwynne kill, pulled with three at 19-16, but the Blue Streaks retaliated with four kills from three different players to pull away.

In the second set, John Carroll did give Kenyon much of a chance. A 5-0 run made the score 11-4 and, shortly after that, another 5-0 run pushed the John Carroll lead to 17-6. The Owls never got closer than nine points the rest of the way.

Blakemore, serving in the middle of the third set, turned things around for the Owls. With the Blue Streaks up 10-9, Kenyon got a point to even things out. Blakemore then served up six more points for Kenyon to give the Owls a 16-10 lead. Blakemore had two aces in the run and Rumpca-Veronese had two kills. A little later, Sophia Menke and Aura Barinas both added two kills to keep Kenyon in front for good.

John Carroll then finalized the evening by running away with the fourth set. After the teams were tied 4-4, the Blue Streaks belted out a 17-4 run that was the knockout punch for the Owls.

The Blue Streaks used 18 different players in the match with Natalie Glowe posting a team-best 14 kills on 44 attempts.

For Kenyon, Rumpca-Veronese's 13 kills were complemented by 10 digs, while Schwemm's 12 assists came with nine digs. Olivia Gumz struck eight kills for the Owls and Gwynne finished with seven.
