Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

No. 1 Denison uses penalty kick to edge Kenyon

GRANVILLE, Ohio -- A controversial call, late in Saturday's men's soccer game, was reviewed by the officials, who awarded the host and No. 1-ranked Denison University Big Red a penalty kick. That kick, converted by Kameron Kist, turned out to be the difference in a 2-1 loss for the visiting Kenyon College Owls.

Kenyon trailed Denison, 1-0, after one half of play, but the Owls appeared to be the better team in the second half, tying up the game and out-shooting Denison 7-4, with just one of those four Big Red shots being on goal.

In the game's 79th minute, with the game all square, Denison was awarded a free kick in the middle of Kenyon territory. That free kick was lobbed into the Kenyon box and players raced to get underneath it. A Denison and Kenyon player challenged, in the air, for it and the official whistled the Kenyon player.

After the review, Kist made good on the penalty kick, going straight up the middle with it. Kenyon goalkeeper Dominic Pratt leaned to his left a bit. He managed to get his hand on the shot, but it wasn't enough to stop it.

Back in the first half of play, a couple of crazy bounces led to the game's first goal, as Denison worked the ball down the left sideline and then the endline. A shot from a tough angle hit the post and bounced out to Denison's Colin MacDonald. He launched a shot that was saved by a Kenyon defender. The ball then came out to Kist, who immediately fired his shot up the middle. It went between two Denison players' legs and past Pratt, who had no way of seeing it.

A little more than nine minutes into the second half, Kenyon recorded the game-tying goal. The play developed off a corner sent in by first-year Joey Nigro. His inbound boot descended in the middle of the Denison box, where it was met by Jack Commandeur. Another first-year player for Kenyon, Commandeur placed a perfect header into the top right corner of the Big Red net, scoring his third goal of the season and his second in the team's last two games.

The next 25 minutes of play saw a bit of chippiness as the team's combined for seven fouls and a couple of yellow cards. Those 25 minutes also went by without a shot from Denison, while Kenyon managed a pair of shots that were both saved by Big Red keeper Alex Provost.

That set the stage for the penalty kick, which took the wind out of Kenyon's sails. The teams continued the aggressive play over the final 10 minutes, with five more fouls and three more yellow cards, but only one shot from each side.

With the win, Denison improved to 9-0-1 overall and 1-0-0 in North Coast Athletic Conference play. The loss for Kenyon dropped the Owls to 4-2-4 overall and 0-1-0 in NCAC action.
