GAMBIER, Ohio – With their postseason hopes on the line, the Kenyon College men's soccer team delivered a dominant performance to close out the regular season, defeating Ohio Wesleyan University 4-0 on Saturday afternoon at Mavec Field. The win propelled the Owls (7-3-7, 3-2-3 NCAC) into the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Tournament while knocking the Battling Bishops out of playoff contention.
Kenyon wasted no time taking control. Just 16 minutes in, first-year Danny Kankam put the Owls on the board with a sensational strike. After a precise through ball from senior Isaac Cortez, Kankam broke free on the right wing, dazzling a defender with quick footwork before faking a shot and cutting inside. With space to fire, he ripped a shot into the top-right corner, securing his second of the season, and sending the home crowd into celebration.
Twelve minutes later, Kenyon doubled its lead off a set piece. Sophomore Gabriel Romanenko launched a long throw-in into the box, where sophomore Andrew Adams flicked a header back toward the penalty area. Cortez met the loose ball with a first-time finish, blasting it into the center of the goal to make it 2-0. In the 55th minute, the Owls extended their lead once more. Off a short corner, Cortez rolled a pass to sophomore Justin Buchwalter, who unleashed a shot from the edge of the box. The initial effort was saved, but the rebound bounced to first-year Jack Commandeur, who tapped it in for Kenyon's third goal of the day. Commandeur now leads the team in goals with five.
The Owls capped off the scoring in the 72nd minute. After sophomore Emmett Brown intercepted a pass in midfield, he threaded a through ball to senior Joaquin Sánchez-Korenfeld, who took two touches, one to fake out his defender and another to slot a composed finish into the bottom-left corner, earning his third of the season and sealing the 4-0 victory.
Kenyon outshot Ohio Wesleyan 16-13, landing nine attempts on target compared to the Bishops' five. The Owls also held an 8-5 advantage in corner kicks and showcased physicality in a chippy match that featured 19 fouls and five yellow cards combined.
Sophomore goalkeeper Dominic Pratt anchored the back line with five saves, earning his sixth clean sheet of the season.
With the win, Kenyon closes the regular season on a high note, finishing 7-3-7 overall and 3-2-3 in NCAC play. The Owls now look ahead to the NCAC Tournament semifinals, where they will travel to face No. 1 seed DePauw University on Wednesday, November 5, at 7:00 p.m.
