Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Owls strike first, but can’t beat Big Red

GRANVILLE, Ohio – The Kenyon College women's soccer team wrapped up the regular season and the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) schedule on Saturday afternoon with a road contest against rival Denison University.

Although the Owls were able to score first early in the opening half, the Big Red answered with three goals of their own for the rest of the game, falling 3-1 after 90 minutes.

Denison tested the Kenyon defensive unit early, registering the game's first five shots, with three of them finding the cage. After Claire Pruner registered the first Owls shot of the match, the team came back to open up the scoring in the 23rd minute.

Hannah Schmidt got the play started by fielding a bouncing ball along the sideline. She muscled through a Denison defender and chipped a pass in the direction of Emily Copeland who was flying towards the goal. Her pressure caused a miscommunication between the Big Red defenders and the keeper, resulting in a collision that left Copeland free for the shot and goal, her team leading ninth of the year.

Less than 10 minutes later, Denison countered with two goals in a matter of 120 seconds to tie up the game and even take the lead. The team's first came by way of a long cross and header, and the latter due to a loose ball in front after a corner that left the Kenyon keeper on the ground.

After halftime, the Owls tried to get the offense going, starting with a shot from Fiona Dougherty, but the Big Red expanded its lead shortly into the half. Another long cross came in front of the box and the home team left no doubt, gaining a 3-1 advantage.

Pruner and Copeland each found the cage with chances to cut into the Denison lead late into the half, but they were all dispatched by keeper Molly Noga. In the end, the Owls could not build on its opening goal, falling 3-1.

For the match, Kenyon trailed 16-8 in shots and 9-6 in shots on goal. The Big Red also held a 5-4 corner edge. Pruner and Copeland led the team with two shots on goal apiece, while Addison Szollosi added one more in the first half. Ariel Kite made five saves in net on the day.

The Owls' record drops to 9-3-5 overall and 3-2-2 in the conference. Despite the loss, Kenyon held on to fourth place in the conference standings and gained the final spot in next week's NCAC Tournament. As the No. 4 seed in the tournament, Kenyon will travel to take on No. 1-seeded John Carroll University in the semifinal round. That game will be played on Thursday at 7 p.m.
