Kenyon’s turnaround season comes to a close

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- An impressive goal from Emily Patrzyk late in the second half propelled the host John Carroll University Blue Streaks to a 1-0 victory over the Kenyon College women's soccer team in Thursday night's North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament semifinal game from Don Shula Stadium.

Kenyon, the No. 4-seeded team in the four-team tournament, defeated John Carroll, 1-0, during the regular season and was looking to do the same in the postseason. The No. 1-seeded Blue Streaks, however, were more aggressive on the attack and it paid off in Thursday's tournament game.

John Carroll came out swinging right away on the offensive end, but many of the Blue Streaks' 10 first-half shots were not on frame. They did, however, generate two close calls. First, in the game's 10th minute, following a corner kick, Julia Ciura headed the inbound ball on net. Kenyon goalkeeper Ariel Kite jumped, extended her right arm, and then swatted the ball off the crossbar.

In the game's 18th minute, Ciura struck again, taking a shot that just skidded over the crossbar and landed on top of the Owls' net.

With the Blue Streaks controlling possession, Kenyon was only able to uncork four shots in the first half. Claire Pruner had a good opportunity in the 19th minute, but her attempt to drop the ball over John Carroll goalkeeper Madeline Martin's head ended up sailing wide right.

In the 34th minute, Emily Copeland launched a free kick for Kenyon that was right on target, but Martin was in perfect position to haul it in.

In the second half, the Blue Streaks came right back with another good chance. This time a shot from Patrzyk, the team's leading scorer, went to the low right corner, where a diving Kite was able to make the save.

Over the course of the next half hour, the teams wore out the midfield, looking for the right pass, the right bounce, or even just the right clear.

In the 76th minute, Kenyon put a scare into the home crowd, as Holly Byun took a quick shot off of an Owls' corner. Her effort, however, went high. Copeland then followed up a minute later with a long shot, but Martin got to it by diving to her left and knocking it away from the lower right corner.

It wasn't until the 81st minute that the game's first, and only, goal was scored. Patrzyk did all the work herself. She drove down the right side, pumped the brakes, and then turned around to set up a left-footed shot from a tough angle. Her shot was perfectly placed into the upper left corner of the Kenyon net, giving Kite no chance.

John Carroll ended up out-shooting Kenyon 16-10 and both goalkeepers recorded four saves.

Despite the loss, the Owls (9-4-5) close out their season with heads held high. The team's nine wins were the most since the 2017 season and eight more wins than what last season's team counted. Additionally, the 2025 Owls set team single-season records for fewest goals allowed (9) goal against average (0.50), and shutouts (11).

On the other side of the field, John Carroll (12-5-1) moves on to host Denison University in the NCAC Tournament final, which will be played Sunday.
