Owls’ hot start fades to OWU in NCAC quarterfinals

DELAWARE, Ohio – Playing in its first North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Tournament match since the 2022 season, the Kenyon College volleyball team took on Ohio Wesleyan on Tuesday night in the quarterfinal round.

Despite a hot start in the first set, the Owls could not keep up with the Bishops in the end, eventually falling 3-0.

Kenyon's (6-20, 2-6 NCAC) best stretch came in the opening frame, leading to the team's best hitting percentage of the match (.219). The Owls jumped out to a 9-5 lead early on in the first, with reigning NCAC Athlete of the Week Mariyah Rumpca-Veronese picking up the lone kill.

Ohio Wesleyan tried to battle back, but Kenyon kept the home team at a distance, eventually opening up a 17-12 lead thanks to two more kills from Rumpca-Veronese and one apiece from Becca Gwynne and Sophia Menke. However, down the stretch in the first, the Bishops were able to take command with a 13-6 run to close the set at 25-23.

In the second, the Owls found themselves with an early lead yet again. Kills from Menke, Gwynne, Rumpca-Veronese and two from Olivia Gumz propelled the visitors to a 10-7 lead. The Bishops again were able to mount a comeback, and after a 6-3 run, things were all square at 13.

Gumz added two more kills in the second, but with a 12-4 run in the later stages of the set, Ohio Wesleyan was able to take a 2-0 lead at 25-17. As a team, Kenyon hit .212 in the second with a game high 10 kills.

The Bishops took control of the third set early and never gave it up, jumping out to a 5-1 lead. Kenyon kept it close in the middle stages, firing off a 7-4 run of its own thanks to a pair of kills from Aura Barinas and one apiece from Rumpca-Veronese, Gumz and Gwynne. In the end, Ohio Wesleyan pulled away to take the set 15-13 and the match 3-0, advancing to the semifinals of the conference tournament.
