Owls soar past Battling Bishops in NCAC battle

DELAWARE, Ohio – After a break from competition, the Kenyon College men's swimming and diving team controlled the waters in their second North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) dual meet of the season, defeating Ohio Wesleyan University 201-46 on Friday evening. The meet was split between sites with the swimming portion held at OWU and diving held at Kenyon's Steen Aquatic Center in Gambier.  

The Owls opened the meet with a sweep in the 200-yard medley relay as the senior team of Djordje Dragojlovic, Nicholas Theodos, Andre McCloud, and Teo Jaworski took first in 1:35.76, followed closely by Kenyon's B relay at 1:36.49.

Kenyon's dominance carried into the freestyle events. Junior Matthew Weiner led a sweep in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 9:59.67, followed by sophomore Lucas Macy (10:03.66) and first-year Ari Jonihakis (10:32.08). In the 200-yard freestyle, first-year Matthew Amodio (1:46.57) edged classmate Gabe Cowart (1:46.72), while junior Pedro Mello Araujo (46.82) and Jaworski (46.87) went one-two in the 100-yard freestyle. Sophomore Lars Rauch added a win in the 50-yard sprint, touching in 21.65. First-year Kristof Szappanos then claimed the 500-yard freestyle in 4:44.46 with Conner Verbanas placing second.

The Owls stayed in control across the stroke and IM events. Senior Ethan Manske led a sweep in the 100-yard backstroke (53.56), while sophomore Zach Schuster paced the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 59.95. Dragojlovic earned his second win of the day in the 100-yard butterfly (51.17), and first-year Thomson Parlette (1:59.55) and Theodos (2:01.02) finished one-two in the 200-yard individual medley.

Kenyon capped off the swimming portion with a win in the 400-yard freestyle relay, as Roman Savage, Jack Douglas, Daniel Ybarbo, and Evan Harrison combined for a time of 3:16.32.

Back home at the Steen Aquatic Center, first-year diver Chase Smith swept both the one- and three-meter events with scores of 516.00 and 325.70, respectively. Senior Owen Peterson and sophomore James Lackner rounded out the top three in both events to complete Kenyon's sweep.

In less than 24 hours, the Owls will look to carry their momentum into tomorrow morning's matchup against Denison University, with action set to begin at 10:00 a.m.
