Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Owls late push secures season-opening win

GAMBIER, Ohio – The 2025 Kenyon College women's lacrosse season got underway on Saturday afternoon from a cold and rainy Field at Benson Bowl, as the Owls hosted the visiting Mount Union Purple Raiders.

Despite trailing early in the fourth quarter and playing one woman down in the game's final minutes, Ashley Quinn scored two pivotal goals in the final minutes of the game to give the home team its first win of the season 15-14.

Neither team could gain a significant advantage throughout the game, as the biggest lead for either team was just three goals. Kenyon (1-0) took its first three-goal lead in the opening quarter, as Alex Tiatia, Lily Mason, Mallory Brophy and Blythe Karras all found twine as the Owls fired a 4-1 lead with 8:57 to play in the first.

Mount Union (0-1) charged back with a 5-0 run to end the first quarter ahead 6-4, but the Owls came back stronger in the second, scoring five goals while giving up just one. Karras scored twice in the frame, while Brophy, Tiatia, and Ashley Auerbach all beat the keeper. Kenyon scooped up a 7-4 groundball advantage in the second as well as an 11-5 shots mismatch to take a 9-7 lead into the half.

After the break, Karras scored her fourth tally of the day to restore a 10-7 advantage, but similar to the first quarter, the Purple Raiders fought back with a 4-2 run to cut the deficit to just one heading into the final quarter.

The visitors scored twice to open the fourth quarter and take their first lead since early in the second period, going ahead 13-12 with 8:58 to play. After over five minutes of scoreless, back-and-forth lacrosse, Brophy tied up the game with a great shot assisted by Quinn, notching the game at 13 with 3:55 to play.

Quinn added the go-ahead goal less than 20 seconds later, as she beat her defender and drove along goal line extended, shoveling a low shot past the keeper to restore Kenyon's lead with 3:37 remaining.

The Purple Raiders showed signs of life after a costly yellow card with 2:18 to play in the contest left the Owls one-woman down for nearly the rest of the game. With 2:06 to play, the visitors found the back of the net and the score was knotted up at 14 and Kenyon was still down a player.

However, Quinn and Kenyon were not done yet. Tiatia took the draw control and Brophy grabbed possession for the Owls. She evaded a double-team and dished to Quinn, who again beat her defender and drove to the net for the game-winning goal with 1:47 to play.

Although Mount Union got the ball back and had a chance, it was stifled by preseason All-American Nola Garand, icing the 15-14 win.

Karras led the way with an assist and five goals, a new career-high for the senior. Quinn was next with four points on two goals and two assists, while Brophy added a hat trick and Tiatia tacked on two.

Garand made seven stops on the day including the game-saving one with 38 seconds to play, boasting a .333 save percentage.

The Owls are back at the Field at Benson Bowl on Saturday, February 22 hosting Roanoke College at 1:00 pm.
