Owls sweep Scots with strong two-way play

FORT PIERCE, Fla. -- The Kenyon College Owls secured their season's first doubleheader sweep on Tuesday, downing the Monmouth College Fighting Scots to snap a three-game skid. Both sides of the ball helped the Owls own the day and sweep the Scots. The Owls offense erupted for a season-high 13 runs in game one before a pair of pitchers held the Scots without an earned run in game two.

Despite scoring a combined 10 runs over a three-game losing streak, the game-one win marked a third straight outing where Kenyon's offense compiled double-digit hits. The Owls' bats stayed hot with 12 knocks and the offense benefitted from four Monmouth miscues, all adding up to the team's first double-digit scoring output this season.

Three seniors led the charge as Dustin Lee paced the Owls with three hits, Nate Rosen racked up three RBIs, and Parker Gibbons got his cardio in with three trips around the bases. Of the 11 Kenyon players with an at-bat, nine came around to score and eight had a hit.

Kenyon (4-7) struck first against the Scots (4-6), starting the twin bill on top after Tyler Nee notched an RBI triple in the top of the second inning. Just an inning later, however, Monmouth returned the favor with their own RBI triple to tie the game at 1-1.

The Owls had an immediate response in the next half-inning, hanging five runs on the board. The scoring kept going in each of the next two innings as Kenyon added two in the fifth and five more in the sixth, opening up a 13-2 lead.

Monmouth bounced back with four runs in the sixth, but Kenyon kept a comeback at bay. The big inning put a bit of a damper on a strong start from Peyton Hodges, but the sophomore still had a big game and held the Scots to just one run over his first five innings. Hodges handed out seven strikeouts over his 5.1-inning outing, a season-high for an Owls pitcher. Jack Enger and Lewis Cropper helped clinch the 13-6 win.

Kenyon's offense carried over to game two as Edwin Groff immediately got the Owls on the board in the first inning. The designated hitter brought the leadoff man, Rosen, home with a sacrifice fly RBI, giving the Owls an early edge.

Monmouth again answered quickly though, tying the game after tacking an unearned run onto Christian Harris's otherwise clean ledger. The teams appeared to be headed for another high-scoring affair after the Owls added three runs in the third, but the big inning marked the last of the scoring.

Lee laced an RBI single as Rosen again rounded the bases, and Nee had another big knock just two batters later, picking up two RBIs to put Kenyon ahead 4-1.

From there, Isaiah Vance was the star of the show. The newcomer, a sophomore transfer, had his season's best outing, spinning four scoreless innings in relief of Harris. Vance vexed Monmouth hitters while his defense helped tally outs, needing just 31 pitches to get through four frames. Overall, the righty earned a win in his first decision, allowing just two hits and adding two strikeouts.

Offensively, Gibbons stayed hot with two more hits, finishing the day with a combined 4-for-7 (.571) mark that pushed his season batting average to a team-leading .425.

Kenyon has two more games left on their spring break slate. The Owls have a day off before lining up against Lasell University at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 13 for a single nine-inning bout.
