Spartans slip by Owls for first loss of the season

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Kenyon College men's tennis team turned in its final start in Florida during the squad's 2025 spring break trip against its toughest opponent, taking on No. 5 Case Western Reserve University Wednesday afternoon.

Although the Owls came away with the win in doubles and captured the first set victory in four out of six singles matches, the Spartans rallied back and handed Kenyon its first loss of the season 4-3.

Gianluca Bocanegra and Rishil Kondapaneni, fresh off of a North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Athlete of the Week honor, picked up Kenyon's first win of the day, dispatching the No. 3 doubles duo 6-3.

The No. 1 and No. 2 flights finished next within a minute of each other. Although the team of Paulo Pocasangre Kreling and Alejandro Gonzalez did not convert in the first flight, falling 6-4, Josh Finkle and Eric Zhang took care of business in the No. 2 flight, winning 7-5 and giving the Owls the early edge.

Kenyon got off to a great start in the singles matches, capturing the first set in four of the six matches. Pocasangre Kreling's match in the No. 1 flight was the longest to finish, taking two hours, but it came with a victory for the Owls, winning 6-4, 7(7)-6(5).

Alejandro Gonzalez bounced back in his No. 3 match, winning 6-2 in the first set and taking the second 7(7)-6(3) to finish in 1:54.

In the fifth flight, Audeh Rakkan fell 6-0 in the opening set before charging on a nice run in the second, but ultimately lost 6-4. Zhang's sixth flight match was the first to finish, falling 6-2, 6-0.

Kondapaneni and Juozas Cioladis each won their opening sets 6-2 in the second and fourth flights respectively. However, both went the other direction, as Kondapaneni fell 6-2, 6-0 in the following two sets, while Cioladis dropped the second and third sets 6-1, 6-3, locking up the 4-3 victory for Case Western.

Kenyon's record drops to 8-1 for the 2025 season. Up next, the Owls will travel to Newport News, Virginia for a series of three matches, the first getting underway on Friday, March 21 at 9:00 am against the University of Mary Washington.
