Owls defeat Tomcats in spring break finale

FORT PIERCE, Fla. -- The Kenyon College baseball team chalked up 15 hits, including five doubles to defeat the Thiel College Tomcats, 14-5, Friday morning at the Lawnwood Sports Complex. The game was the last in the Sunshine State for the Owls, who now return home with a 6-7 record.

Nine different batters accounted for Kenyon's hits and five of those batters had multi-hit games. Nate Rosen, Ben Resnick, and Tyler Nee all had two-hit games, while, at the middle of the order, Edwin Groff went 2-for-3 with three walks and three runs scored. Right behind him, Dustin Lee posted a 3-for-5 game that included two runs and a team-best four RBI.

After the teams traded a run in the first inning, Thiel tacked on another run off Kenyon starter Frank Lynch in the top of the third. Kenyon, however, responded with a two-run fourth to claim its first lead. Those two runs came on a bases-loaded single from Nee and a sacrifice fly from Rosen.

In the fifth, Kenyon expanded its advantage by tallying four more runs. The Owls got Groff on base via a walk. Lee and Parker Gibbons then singled to load the bases. One batter later, Price brought them all home with a three-run double and later came around to score on a single from Nee.

That Kenyon cushion took on some stress in the next inning. Thiel chased Lynch and put together three runs on four hits. That brought the Tomcats within two, at 7-5.

Maintaining the lead helped Lynch (2-0) get the win. He worked five innings and gave  up three runs, only one of which was earned. He didn't issue a walk and he fanned six.

Kenyon put the game away in the seventh, scoring seven times. With two outs and two men on, the Owls, who had just three hits in the inning, capitalized on three Thiel errors. Rosen and Trey Kent-Landrum had RBI singles in the inning, while Price drew a walk that forced home another run.

Back on the defensive side, Chris Cannuscio pitched three innings in relief of Lynch. He gave up an earned run before giving way to Griffin Jackson, who finished off the game with a scoreless ninth.

The Owls now have a week-long break from competition. Their next games, which will be their home opener, will be a March 22 doubleheader against Albion College.
