Owls start season with offensive fireworks

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Kenyon College Owls softball team launched the 2025 season Sunday with two wins and a combined 42 runs in a doubleheader sweep at Gallaudet University. Both wins were recorded within five innings using the run rule. Game one ended 25-0 and game two finished up at 17-3.

Not only did Kenyon outscore the host Bison, 42-3, but it racked up an enormous 36-4 advantage in hits. The Owls amassed 20 hits in game one and another 16 hits in game two. Spanning both games, Kenyon batters posted a combined .493 average at the plate.

Leading the hit parade was sophomore Keala Montgomery, who was 6-for-9 with five runs scored and six RBI on the day. Another sophomore, Brooke Avila, had a monster day, as well. In six at-bats, she had four hits, four runs, three RBI, a walk, and an on-base percentage of .714.

The Owls wasted little time in making their presence known. They scored six runs in the top of the first inning of game one. Avila smoked a two-run single to start things off and Amanda Harris and Sophia Lynch followed with run-scoring singles. The other two Kenyon runs were plated on a fielder's choice and a Gallaudet error.

Kenyon put three more on the board in the top of the second inning and then put the game away with an 11-run fourth inning. Lynch, who was 3-for-4 in game one, produced a two-run RBI in the inning in which Kenyon's output was produced by eight hits and four Gallaudet errors.

Lynch finished with three runs scored and a game-high five RBI in game one. Also scoring three times for Kenyon were Emma Cashell, Maeve McLaughlin, Leah Kuban, and Morgan Gardner.

Not much changed in game two. Kenyon lit up the scoreboard with three runs in the first inning, four in both the third and fifth, and six runs in the fourth inning.

Montgomery cranked out a 4-for-4 game that was a triple shy of the cycle. She scored three times and had six RBI, including two on a first-inning home run.

Madison Buckwalter and Arianna Jalomo were both 2-for-4 in game two. Buckwalter, who laced a run-scoring triple in the fourth inning, scored twice and had three RBI. Jalomo had three runs and three RBI.

In addition to impressive hitting, the Owls were nearly perfect on the basepaths, stealing 14 bags in 15 attempts. As a team, Kenyon swiped 10 bases in game one, which was a program single-game record.

In the pitching circle, sophomore Kylie Hamm captured the game-one win by going four innings and allowing just two hits. She walked one and struck out seven. First-year Izzy Akin closed out the final inning of game one and then came on in relief in game two, recording all but two outs. In all, Akin tossed a little more than five innings, didn't allow a run and fanned a dozen.

Kenyon now heads to Raleigh, North Carolina for a Monday doubleheader at William Peace University. Game one is slated to start at 1:00 p.m.
